ENGLISH EXTENDED ESSAY (EE) DATES:

June 23rd, 2014: General Meeting – Key points

  1. Ensure you are listed on ManageBac with an examiner.
  2. Pick a work of sufficient literary merit:can include novels, short stories, collected poems. Ask your supervisor for guidance. Primary text must have been written originally in English (i.e. not a translation).
  3. Must find scholarly criticism from peer reviewed academic journals. Recommended that you cite three to four in your essay, so initially find 9 or 10 to pick the most relevant. Most online sources, including student help sites, Wikipedia, etc. are not appropriate. Use academic databases/visit university libraries to find your materials.
  4. Extended Essay must focus on authorial technique and significance of authorial choices – what are they and what is the effect? The scope of specificity of your thesis can often determine level of success. Narrow your argument.
  5. Read the full EE manual for requirements and rubric. Itis very specific about details. Ensure you follow them. Know how your EE mark will be used with your TOK essay to earn IB diploma points (see matrix).
  6. Meet all deadlines. If you are not prepared for your meetings you risk not getting relevant feedback that will help you succeed on this task.
  7. Make sure you know what constitutes plagiarism. Otherwise strong students have been denied their IB diploma because they plagiarized on this task (very likely because they had not completed enough work by the deadlines).

Note: You will have a lot of conflicting priorities in the beginning of your IB2 year, including applying to post-secondary institutions. Since your EE is not linked to a course in your timetable, it is all-too-easy to not prioritize it and then fall behind. You must complete an Extended Essay on time in order to be eligible for an IB Diploma. The following dates and deadlines have been chosen to help you avoid conflicts (e.g. January reporting period; ToK essay in third term).

The more work that you can complete on your own over the summer, the better position you will be in for IB2!
