Frequently Asked Questions

PRODUCT LINEUP

What is Microsoft® Office Project 2003?

Microsoft Office Project 2003 is a family of products — Microsoft Office Project Standard 2003, Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003 and Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 — that are designed to address the work- and people-management needs of today’s organizations.

Who can benefit from using Microsoft Office Project?

Business professionals and organizations can benefit from using Microsoft Office Project 2003. Business professionals include business managers, project managers, resource managers, IT professionals, consultants, project team members and executives.

Microsoft Office Project Standard helps these users plan, manage and communicate project information, resulting in increased productivity. For organizations that need visibility into their work portfolio, the Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management Solution provides the tools to make well-informed decisions, optimize resources and establish repeatable processes, and helps ensure widespread participation by offering familiar, integrated tools.

Why did Microsoft change Project to Microsoft Office Project?

The name change is to confirm and identify Project’s place in the Microsoft Office System, a collection of programs, servers and services that connect people and organizations to information, business processes and each other, and help ensure that they derive the most value out of their information.

What is Microsoft Office Project Standard?

Microsoft Office Project Standard is the most popular desktop project management program for effectively planning, managing and communicating project information.

What is Microsoft Office Project Professional?

Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003 is a desktop enterprise project management (EPM) program that is used with Project Server2003 and Project Web Access for the Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management Solution.

What is the difference between Project Standard and Project Professional?

Project Professional provides all the core project management tools in Project Standard, and when used with Project Server and Project Web Access it also provides powerful EPM capabilities such as portfolio management and modeling, skill-based resource management, and project collaboration.

What is the Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management Solution?

The Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management Solution brings together client, server and Web-based technology to give users everything they need to manage companywide projects:

·  Microsoft Office Project Professional. Project Professional is the project management program for enterprise project management. It can be used to connect to Microsoft Project Server for enterprise project management functionality.

·  Microsoft Office Project Server. Project Server provides a central repository to publish project and resource information. Either the Project Professional edition or Project Web Access can be used to connect to Project Server. Users should note that the e-mail based workgroup features, though still in the product, are hidden by default in this release, and may be completely removed in future releases depending on customer feedback. In addition, Microsoft Project Server does not install Windows® SharePoint™ Services (formerly called SharePoint Team Services) by default. Windows SharePoint Services requires Windows Server™ 2003 and is included as a component of the operating system.

·  Microsoft Office Project Web Access. Project Web Access gives project managers and team members the ability to view and update project information on Project Server using just a Web browser.

With Project Professional, Project Server and Project Web Access, users gain visibility across their portfolio of projects, increase resource utilization, and enhance collaboration with team members to reduce costs, improve quality and shorten time to market.
