FOREWORD

The nursing profession is a noble one. It is not only taking care of the patient as an individual, but as a member of the family and society. The humanitarian aspects of the patient such as his hopes, aspirations, worries, anxieties, apprehensions and tensions due to disease process are also to be looked into with great patience which plays a vital role for the amelioration of the condition of the patient. To become a good nurse all these qualities are to be developed during the training course.

INTRODUCTION

Al-Ameen Movement is a self help movement, started in Bangalore in the year 1966 by Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan. In 2004, a great builder and a known philanthropist, Mr. Ziaulla Sheriff took over as the President of Al Ameen Charitable Fund Trust. It works for the upliftment of muslims in particular and the others in general. In pursuance of these aims, Al-Ameen works in the field of education, health, economic upliftment and the sports activities. It has started a number of educational Institutions like Schools, Colleges, Hospitals Medical and Dental Colleges etc, in various parts of the country.

As a part of extension of educational activities, the Al-Ameen Charitable Fund Trust, under auspices of Al-Ameen Movement, has started its nursing school in the year 1998 named as “Al-Ameen Fathima School of Nursing” and the college of Nursing started in the year 2004, with Basic B.Sc. Nursing programme which is attached to Al-Ameen Medical College Hospitals, Bijapur.

The three and half (3 ½ ) years Diploma Nursing course and Four years B. Sc. Nursing course are so designed that the nurses may be skilled not only in bedside care but also understand the principles of health and prevention of disease. During the course of this training it is expected that they acquire a good deal of experience in the development of health teaching, in the out patient department and wards of the Hospital, Maternal and child health clinics, home visit, both at rural and urban areas and domiciliary midwifery practice both at rural and urban areas.

The role of the nurse as a member of health team is very vital. The doctor makes the diagnosis and prescribes drugs but the total care of the patient has to be managed by the nurse. Hence a great responsibility lies with the nurse.

Nursing care is generally viewed as a unique health service system which aims at providing care to the individuals in various conditions which cannot be managed by the family members.

PHILOSOPHY

We believe that the nursing is an integral part of medical profession & we further believe that the nursing is a fast developing which maintains its nobility in all respect. We also believe that nursing personnel who are prepared to give comprehensive nursing care are important members of Health team.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

The aim of this nursing college is to prepare qualified nursing care, in promotion of health care system in the community to meet any challenge in the health care.

OBJECTIVES:

1.  To give training in nursing care of patients in all types of diseases.

2.  To educate them to participate in various Programmes in prevention of diseases & promotion of health in the community. They will carry out their Programmes is co-operation with medical & Paramedical personnel.

3.  To impart the knowledge & help them to develop skill to carry out the National Programmes in prevention & treatment of diseases.

4.  To help them to understand the emotional background, the physical & mental status of the diseased person.

5.  To help them to understand the mental hygiene, ethical & moral standards involved in the practice of Nursing.

6.  To prepare them to educate all others around them to have healthy living.

7.  To keep up the standard of nursing profession.

8.  To prepare them to take care of community health in rural areas, by regular home visiting, health education & domiciliary nursing care & midwifery.

DESCRIPTION OF NURSING COURSES

A) B.Sc. Nursing:

The Basic B.Sc. Nursing course comprises of 4 years duration. This programme of study leads to a B.Sc. Nursing Degree offered by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. Karnataka, required to possess high motivation towards Nursing profession. They should possess special qualities of a spirit of altruism, commitment and dedication to work and a high level of maturity other than the academic requirements. The programme theoretical instruction integrated with clinical experience as per the requirements.

After the fourth year the candidates are required to put in One Year of Experience to enable the students to take up the first level position in Nursing. However with experience they can rapidly move into leadership and supervisory positions in various areas of Nursing Education and Practice. This programme provides the necessary foundation to take up postgraduate studies in Nursing.

The course is permitted by the Karnataka Government and State Nursing Council, and Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. The yearly intake of students is forty.

Admission Criteria for B.Sc. (N)

A candidate seeking admission should have:

1.  Passed the two year Pre-university examination or equivalent as recognized by Rajiv Gandhi University Health Sciences, with science subjects, Viz., Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

2.  Obtained at least forty five percent (45 %) of the total marks in English and science subjects (PCBE) of the qualifying examination; if belonging to a scheduled or a scheduled tribe, should have obtained not less than forty percent of the total marks in English and science subjects (PCBE) of the qualifying examination.

3.  Completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete this age on or before 31st of December of the year of admission.

4.  Students of Vocational Courses: 10+2 vocational course of State Government of Kerala with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects.

B) Diploma Nursing (GNM)

The Diploma Nursing course comprises of 3 ½ years duration which includes Midwifery. Examination is taken at the end of each year and 6 months for internship after which the students are eligible to get registration from Karnataka State Nursing Council, Bangalore.

The course is permitted by the Karnataka Government and State Nursing Council, and Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. The yearly intake of students is forty.

Admission Criteria for GNM:

1.  Minimum and Maximum age for admission will be 17 and 35 years respectively.

2.  Minimum education :

a)  10+2 class passed or its equivalent preferably with science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) subjects with aggregate of 40 % marks.

b)  Those who have cleared 10+2 vocational, ANM course (revised after 2001) from the school recognized by Indian Nursing Council.

c)  ANM training i.e. 10+1 ½ Years training should also have passed +2 or its equivalent examination.

3.  Students shall be medically fit.

FACILITIES AND GENERAL INFORMATION:

1.  Nursing Practice: The entire hospital complex of Al-Ameen Medical College with all advanced procedures and sophisticated investigations like CT Scan, C-ARM machine, T.U.R with Resectoscope and cytoscope. Flexible esophagoscope and gastroscope, stress test, Echocardiogram, C T myelogram, USG guided biopsy, C T Angiogram, Neuro I.C.U, Neo – natal I.C.U. Cardiac ICU and ICCU operation theatres are well equipped in all specialties. The nursing students are exposed to all these advanced techniques and different procedures.

2.  A well-developed Community Health Department with urban & rural community centers with various developmental activities planned and executed scientifically are at the disposal of students for practical community health nursing experience.

3.  Extensive library service together with systematic use of audiovisual aids are available to help the students in their learn process.

4.  Individualized attention right through the programme will be provided.

5.  Religious Activities: There is a mosque within the hospital premises. And there is provision for prayers for the female staff and students in the premises.

6.  Extra Curricular Activities: In view of the main aim of education as the total development of the person, a number of opportunities are provided for the students to develop their skills and talents at various levels, through membership to Student and Trained Nurses Associations and participation at local, state and national conferences and scientific exhibitions which promote leadership potentialities in the students. Besides these, opportunities to develop talents in music, dance, indoor and outdoor games and sports also are provided.

7.  Health Services: On admission every student will undergo a Medical examination. An annual check-up will be done for all the students. Medical care will be given to all the students in case of illness as per the student Health Scheme.

8.  During the course, a high standard of health has to be maintained. In case of any illness as that of epilepsy, heart diseases and mental health deviations detection detected after admission, the students may be asked to discontinue the course.

9.  Hostel: Stay in the hostel is encouraged to meet the requirements of the course both academic and clinical. During the stay in the hostel, the student will strictly adhere to the hostel rules. Visiting time is scheduled for Saturday after class hour and on Sundays.

10. Mess: All the students of the hostel shall be required to join the mess. Booklet on rules regarding Hostel and Mess is available at the office.

11. Kannada Class: provision is made for Non-Karnataka students to learn Kannada, which is a syllabus requirement and is essential to facilitate communication with the patients during clinical experience.

12. Vacation: Vacations are planned according to the programme of the course. If the students are unable to return on time due to illness, the Principal should be intimated immediately by telephone/e-mail followed by an explanation. On return they should submit a medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner stating full particulars of their illness and treatment. Normally, no other leave will be granted except the planed vacation. Students are not granted leave for social events in the family. In case a student absents herself from duty / class for any reasons and the Principal is not satisfied with the explanation regarding her absence, the student will be asked to make up for the number of days of absence, as approved by the Principal. Those not having at least 80% of attendance for any subject will not be permitted to appear for examination.

13. Anti Ragging Committee: The Anti-Ragging Committee (Review Committee) is formed to look into this matter who will keep vigilance over the students to prevent any sort of ragging in the college, Hospital, Hostels and the campus as a whole. According to Government order “Ragging” in any form is a “Criminal Offence” if any student is involved in ragging, action will be taken against him/her including Rustication from college and Criminal Proceedings.

14. Academic Progress and clinical Evaluation: All students are expected to maintain a high academic and clinical standard of performance throughout the programme. To this effect regular written and practical session examinations will be conducted. Consistent standards of excellence are expected at all time. Students who do not show any progress or who fail repeatedly will not be allowed to appear for examination/ continue course.

15. Internal Assessment: Internal assessment in each subject is carried out at prescribed times and the internal assessment carries 25% weightage of the total university marks.

16. Examination: The students appear for theory and practical examination of the Rajiv Gandhi University at the end of every academic year as prescribed. A mid term examination and two sessional examinations will be conducted every year by the college. Examination fee as determined by the University should be paid by the students.

17. Educational Field Visit: During the course of studies the students will be sent for educational field trip extending over a period of 10-15 days, or more. Expenses will be borne by the students.

18. Work Experience: In case of B.Sc. Nursing on completion of the course of four years, all graduates will be required to put in one year compulsory work experience in the parent institution or any sister institution of Al-Ameen should a need arise. During this period they will be paid an allowance, which will be fixed by the Management from time to time.

19. Withdrawal and agreement: As a matter of policy students are not relieved during the course or during the compulsory service. However, if any student after admission to the course decides to withdraw voluntarily from the college at any time before compulsory service she will have to pay the fees for the remaining period of the course and a penalty amounting to Rs.25,000/-. However, fees already paid will not be refunded.
