Chapter 1: Modeling Making Connections: Connector

Pgs. 2-3: I remember when I was thirteen and my dad decided we were going to move out of my favorite childhood house. I was angry, miserable, and frustrated because I loved our quaint little neighborhood, the friends I had there and the memories I had in the house. Even though the new house was bigger, I didn’t care.

Pg. 6-7: When we moved, we didn’t go too far away, and I stayed in the same school district, so I didn’t have to say goodbye to my friends like Bruno is going to do. However, I can imagine how difficult that would be.

Chapter 7: Pick a Paragraph to Analyze: Literary Luminary

Literary Luminary: Your job is to choose a paragraph or sentences from the book to discuss with your group. Your purpose is to help other students by spotlighting something interesting, powerful, funny, puzzling, or important from the text. Read parts aloud yourself. Include your reasons for picking the paragraphs or sections you did. Please record the page number and paragraph.

Paragraph and reason for choosing:

Pg. 55 “ Some days later Bruno was lying on the bed …….not even the insects would ever to choose to stay at Out-With.”

I think the author did a beautiful job of showing the way Bruno feels with this imagery of the cracked ceiling. He feels the cracks in his own life and maybe even the chilling truth and reality starting to be peeled away like the white paint described in this paragraph. It is as if he will start to see what this place really is. He is sensing the ugliness of it and when the author talks about the insects trying to find an escape, it relates perfectly to the way Bruno feels. I love this extended simile. It is very visual and very powerful.
