Catalog Description:

This is a non-credit class designed to bring non-English speaking students to a level of English acquisition which will prepare them to enter beginning level ESL classes. Students will begin to acquire an English vocabulary and a rudimentary command of the language so they may begin a structural study of English in the ESL classes that follow.

Needs/Justifications/Goals:

Many students want to attend college classes, but have almost no English language skills. Some rudimentary skills are required before these students can begin to study the structure of English. These courses would prepare students for entry level ESL study.

Literacy

I. Catalog Description

ESL 1X, Literacy 0 Units

This is a non-credit class designed to bring non-English speaking students to a level of English acquisition which will prepare them to enter beginning level ESL classes. Students will begin to acquire an English vocabulary and a rudimentary command of the language so they may begin a structural study of English in the ESL classes that follow.

II. Expected Outcomes for Students

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to perform the following activities with 70% accuracy.

A.  Learn and reproduce the English alphabet.

B.  Reproduce name, address, and telephone number.

C.  Tell time.

D.  Demonstrate use and knowledge of the calendar.

E.  Demonstrate knowledge of money by counting and making change.

F.  Use vocabulary relating to school and demonstrate by answering, orally and in writing, questions.

G.  Learn and reproduce vocabulary relating to family.

H.  Demonstrate knowledge of foods by identifying pictures and producing shopping and other lists.

I.  Identify health related issues by naming body parts, medicine and basic emergency terms.

J.  Demonstrate an understanding of work related words and topics by writing sentences about work.
