GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY CELEBRATES 27TH YEAR OF SERVING COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Bloomington, MN –Every year youth around the globe celebrate and take pride in their community service actions throughout the year through GYSD. Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is a world-wide weekend long event celebrated by 135 countries. GYSD 2015 takes place April 17-19. Through GYSD youth with help from organizations, non-profits, schools, and communities target and focus on a critical issue in their communities and society. GYSD is a campaign based off of Youth Service America (YSA), whom are leaders in the youth service movement.

Minnesota FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) celebrates GYSD as a state delegation through service projects throughout our State Conference April 16-18 at the Hilton Double Tree in Bloomington, MN.

Throughout the conference we will be collecting and obtaining information to include in a service project tractor GYSD offers youth. It allows youth to track their service projects and also view other service projects. We encourage members to enter in information on their service projects throughout the year to show the world that Minnesota is a leader in service projects throughout our state. With the hashtag, #getitonthemap, members are also encouraged to post and tweet their service projects on social networking sites.

We begin our state conference with a Parade of Service Projects. This gives chapters throughout the state the opportunity to display and showcase their community service projects throughout the year. Many chapter find excitement in having the chance to show the entire state delegation all of the service projects they have taken part in throughout the year.

Minnesota FCCLA is participating in our 2nd annual Push Back Curfew for a Cause. This a fun and exciting event that charges members to stay out past the regular state conference curfew to attend a session providing educational, informative, and motivating sessions and special speakers. The money collected is then contributed to programs and aiding societal issues of today.

Minnesota FCCLA delegation will also be taking part in a service project of collecting personal care items to support Hope4Youth and other teen homeless shelters. Hope4Youth is a homeless shelter for youth set in Anoka, MN. Their goal is to have Anoka county youth homeless free by 2024. This is no easy goal, but with help from caring and supportive youth around the state, it is possible. We hope to collect and distribute personal care items for Hope4Youth and other homeless shelters throughout Minnesota to reach this goal of no homeless youth.

GYSD creates a platform for youth service, but we build onto that platform by taking part and contributing to community service state and nation-wide throughout the year.
