The 8-Concert Classical Seriesis the core of the Philharmonic Orchestra season. Classical Series concerts take place on Saturday evenings at 8:00 at VMA, Providence. Music Director Larry Rachleff, beginning his 15th season with the Orchestra, will conduct seven concerts, with GUEST conductorjahja ling taking the podium for the January 22 concert. Following each of his concerts, Mr. Rachleff, frequently accompanied by the guest soloist or a member of the Orchestra, holds casual post-concert conversations with members of the audience. RESIDENT CONDUCTORFrancisco Noya presents informal pre-concert talks from 7:00-7:25 before each concert; Philharmonic Music School students may perform on the mezzanine level from 7:15-7:45.
Classical Series subscriptions, now on sale, are priced at $235, $255, $325, $410, $475 and $500, depending on seat location. Considered one of the great pianists of our time, Horacio GutiÉrrez is praised by critics and audiences alike for his poetic insight and technical mastery. Since his debut in 1970 with Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mr. Gutiérrez has appeared regularly with the world’s greatest orchestras and on its major recital series.Mr. Gutiérrez’s Telarc recordings include the Grammy nominated recording of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3 with Lorin Maazel and the Pittsburgh Symphony.
In past seasons, Mr. Gutiérrez has given recitals at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Berlin’s Philharmonie, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival and New York’s Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, as well as in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Cleveland. Born in Havana, Cuba, Horacio Gutiérrez appeared as guest soloist with the Havana Symphonyat the age of 11. He became an American citizen in 1967. A graduate of the Juilliard School, he is married to pianist Patricia Asher and resides in New York City.

Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient violinist Jennifer Frautschi has gained acclaim as an adventurous performer with a wide-ranging repertoire, equally as at home in the classic repertoire as with20th and 21st century works. In past seasons she has performed the Britten Concerto, Poul Ruders' Concerto No. 1, Steven Mackey's Violin Sonata and Mendelssohn's rarely played D minor Concerto, along with standards: Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Berg Concerti.
Ms. Frautschi has appeared as soloist with Pierre Boulez and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Christoph Eschenbach and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival and at Wigmore Hall and Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival. She has soloed in recent seasons with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Cincinnati Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, San Diego Symphony, and Seattle Symphony.For more information, log on to her website:

Guest Conductor Jahja Lingtakes the baton on Saturday, January 22 at 8:00with Pianist JESSIE CHANGperforming Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, op. 21. The program he has selected includes Suppé’s Poet and Peasant Overtureand Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
Jahja Ling’s distinguished career as an internationally renowned conductor has earned him a reputation for musical integrity, intensity and expressivity. Mr. Ling is in his seventh season asMusic Director of the San Diego Symphony. As a guest conductor, he has conducted all of the major orchestras in North America including Cleveland, Rochester, Baltimore, Honolulu, Phoenix, Houston and Pittsburgh. During his tenure with Cleveland Mr. Ling served as Associate Conductor in the 1984-85 season, as Resident Conductor from 1985-2002 and as Blossom Festival Director for six seasons(2000-2005).
In the spring of 2004, he received critical acclaim for his performances of Mahler’s First and Fifth symphonies with the Boston Symphony and Pittsburgh Symphony, respectively. He also is committed to working with young musicians and has conducted the orchestras of the Juilliard School (where he is a regular guest), the Curtis Institute and the Aspen Music Festival.
Jessie Changis admired for her beautiful tone, virtuosic technique and individual personality. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. She has received top honors in more than 30 distinguished piano competitions of national and international stature.
Among the highlights of her career, Ms. Chang performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3with the Florida Orchestra, Mozart Piano Concerto in G Major with the MalaysianPhilharmonic and Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn at Carnegie Hall’s IsaacStern Auditorium.
As an active chamber musician, Ms. Chang has collaborated with well-known musicians such asWilliam Preucil and Frank Cohen as well as with several principals of the San Diego Symphony. She hasbeen featured in solo piano recitals in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles,New York and Sicily, Italy.She is married to conductor JAHJA LING.

OnSaturday evening, February 26at 8:00Music Director LARRY RACHLEFF returns to the podium for a concert that features Pianist JON KIMURA PARKER in a performance of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, op. 83. The Orchestra opens the concert with Wagner’s Lohengrin: Prelude, Act III and also performs R. Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra, TrV 176, op. 30.
Always a Philharmonic favorite, internationally acclaimed pianistJON KIMURA PARKER’s extraordinary career has taken him from Carnegie Hall and London's Royal Festival Hall to Baffin Island and Zimbabwe. A true Canadian ambassador of music, Mr. Parker has given two command performances for Queen Elizabeth II, special performances for the United States Supreme Court and has performed for the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan. He is an Officer of The Order of Canada, his country's highest civilian honor.
Mr. Parker’s recent summer festival appearances have included the Hollywood Bowl, Minnesota Sommerfest, Mainly Mozart, Sun Valley and Vail, as well as chamber music festivals in Amelia Island, La Jolla, Santa Fe, Seattle, Steamboat Springs and Orcas Island. On Saturday March 19 at 8:00pm LARRY RAHCLEFF and the Orchestra welcome extraordinary young violinist KAREN GOMYO to the stage for a performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216 (Strassburg). Mr. Rachleff has selected Mozart’s Cosi fan tutti Overture, K.588 and the Shostakovich Symphony No.11 in G minor,op. 103 (The Year 1905).
Recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2008, Canadian violinistKaren Gomyo first caught public attention one week after her 15th birthday when she won the 1997 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. She became the youngest artist ever to be presented in the Series, in a critically acclaimed New York debut as recipient of the Summis Auspiciis Prize and has been heard as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician ever since across the US, Canada, South America, Europe and Asia.

april 16 - Kim, Tchaikovsky & Lutoslawski
Violinist DAVID KIM joins LARRY RACHLEFF and the Orchestra on Saturday, April 16 at 8:00pm for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The Orchestra opens the concert with Smetana’s The Bartered Bride Overture and perform Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra.
Violinist David Kim was named Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999. Born in Carbondale, Illinois in 1963, he started playing the violin at the age of three, began studies with the famed pedagogue Dorothy DeLay at the age of eight and later received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Juilliard.
Mr. Kim was founder and, for 20 years ending in 2008, artistic director of the Kingston Chamber Music Festival at the University of Rhode Island, from which he also was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Arts in 2001. In conjunction with the Festival, he founded an annual outreach program that took him to elementary schools, performing and speaking about classical music in an effort to cultivate future audiences. To conclude the 2010-2011 Season onSaturday May 7 at 8:00pm, Music Director LARRY RACHLEFF leads the Orchestra in a performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 in D major.Mezzo-soprano BETHCLAYTON and the Women of the Providence Singers join the Orchestra for the concert.
Renowned as a unique musician and stage performer, Beth Clayton has been praised for her outstanding performances with America’s leading opera companies and orchestras. Highlights of recent seasons include her debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in John Adams’s El Niño; Carmen at Santa Fe Opera and for her company debut at Calgary Opera; Pasqualita in the world premiere of John Adams’ Doctor Atomic at San Francisco Opera; her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich in a new production of Handel's Orlando and a return to Lyric Opera of Chicago as Maddalena in a new production of Rigoletto.
Beth Clayton also appears regularly with leading orchestras in an equally varied repertoire. Her most recent appearances include Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Orpheus at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and her Cleveland Orchestra debut in the role of Death in Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol conducted by Pierre Boulez. Other appearances include her debut with the Montreal Symphony in Mahler's Symphony No. 8 conducted by Charles Dutoit. She made her debut with the National Symphony singing Handel's Messiah with Hogwood. She has also performed this work with the San Diego Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Boston Baroque and the Florida Philharmonic. Her Baltimore Symphony debutwas in Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream. A further highlight was her appearance in a “Live from Lincoln Center” telecast of A Salute to the American Musical.
This concert will be the eighth guest appearance by the Providence Singerswith the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. The chorus and orchestra also join forces to present Handel’s Messiah each December. Prior guest appearances with the Philharmonic include the Fauré Requiem in 2004, Orff’s Carmina Burana in 2005, the Poulenc Gloria in 2006, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms in 2008, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy in 2009 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in May 2010.
Led by artistic director Andrew Clark, the Providence Singers is noted for its “wonderful vocal blend, and an impeccable sense of voicing” (Providence Journal). An appearance with Dave Brubeck at the 2004 Newport Jazz Festival was hailed by Mr. Brubeck as “the best performance yet” of his cantata, Gates of Justice; at hisrequest, the Singers premiered Mr. Brubeck’s The Commandments and reprised Gates at Lincoln Center in 2005.
THE RUSH HOUR SERIES
Now in its ninth season, this popular 4-Concert early Friday evening Series is conducted by Music Director Larry Rachleff and hosted by NBC10’s news anchor Patrice Wood.The concerts take place at VMA Arts & Cultural Center in Providence. The concerts begin at 6:30 and last approximately 75 minutes, with repertoire selected from the full-length Classical Series concerts the Orchestra will perform on the following Saturdays. Informality is the key to this series. The concert ambiance is relaxed with Larry and Patrice talking about the music as the concert progresses. At the end of each concert Larry comes back onstage for a question and answer session with audience members.

ViolinistJENNIFER FRAUTSCHI returns to the Philharmonic this season, and she will perform selected movements from Barber’s Violin Concerto. The Orchestra will also perform Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Ravel’s La Valse.

The third concert in the series includes the annual Side-By-Side performance with members of the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. In addition, Pianist Jon Kimura Parkerjoins the Orchestra performing selected movements of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 and the Orchestra performs R. Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra.

For the final Rush Hour concert of the season Violinist David Kim joins the Orchestra in a performance of selected movements of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The Orchestra also performs Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra.

OPEN REHEARSALS
for the fourth season, the Philharmonic will make selected Friday Night rehearsals open to the public. The rehearsals take place at VMA, Providence and begin at 5:30 with a very short pre-rehearsal welcome and introduction by Resident Conductor FRANCISCO NOYA. Once the rehearsals begin, the conductor will be miked so that the audience can hear his remarks to members of the orchestra and his discussion with the guest soloist. Patrons may sit wherever they choose on the main floor or the mezzanine and may change seats at the rehearsal break. Patrons may stay for the full rehearsals which end at 8:00 or leave at the break, at approximately 6:45-7:00. We do not guarantee that all Saturday night Classical concert repertoire will be rehearsed at each Friday night Open Rehearsal.
