Min01/05/04/2014: Arrival.
Old boys started trickling in as early as 8.30am.The boys were eagerly waiting for this day.Musingu Alumni who cleared in different years graced this wonderful day. The attendance ranged from those for finished school in 1974 to those in 2009.
Min02/05/04/2014: Initial Briefing from the Principal
The Principal Mr. Elphas Aliva Luvaso briefed the Alumni on the progress of the school. Just but to mention a few areas:-
Finance
The reiterated that when he was posted to Musingu, the school account was at -8,000,000(Eight million shillings) and the school was in so much debt but at the moment, the account is at +1,500,000M.The radical changes he made saw a few people quit their positions. Action was also taken against those found culpable
Infrastructure
The principal highlighted the key areas in the school which are getting a facelift. These are; Renovations in the teachers staff houses; six new classes (read tiled plus ceiling fitted); construction of Eco-friendly toilets going on(24 in number); refurbishing of the Dining hall . The Principal also highlighted the essence Musingu having a modern dormitory. The cost of the new ultra-modern domirtory is estimated at Kshs. 20,000,000. Efforts to fund raise are targeting the county government, PTA and the alumni.
In addition he briefed us that the County Government has installed FREE INTERNET CONNECTION in Musingu to facilitate better communication of all departments. To this effect, he has provided all Heads of Departments with Laptops in their offices. The Principal and the Deputy are equipped with Tablets(indeed we are in the Digital World so Musingu should be)
Academics
This is one key area where all the Alumni were eager to know the status . The Principal supplied us with the 2013 KCSE breakdown. The school had a mean score of 8.10 this was a deviation of -0.40 from the previous year. He reiterated that 211 out of 250 students in the 2013 class added value to the school. He promised us that the 2014 class is promising and everything is under control. The Syllabus is well covered in most subjects. The school has set a target Mean of 10.00. Apart from this, the Principal highlighted Food Security in the school has been beefed up. The school has its own bakery, slaughter house and there is plenty of vegetables for the school. This saves the school money for other projects.
Min03/05/04/2014: Tour of the School
The Principal and a few of the teaching staff(who happen also to be Proud Alumni of Musingu) took us around the school premises. The Alumni was noted that infrastructure is a key prerequisite for better performance.Musingu should start having the face of mega structures in this era. It was noted that the old buildings have been there for long and radical works need to be done in this area. As earlier mentioned,Eco-friendly toilets are being put up, classes have been completed, the DH at least has a good look, the staff quarters are being refurbished and above all the offices are now well equipped.
Min04/05/04/2014: Motivational Talks
The Alumni split itself into different groups and started with motivational talks at class level then later on assembled in the dining hall.Afew of us spoke on different areas including James Aluha who spoke all the way from Montréal, Canada(Through Skype).Their message was great to the boys and can be summarized as follows
- Advised the boys to set the best goals
- Reminded them what really the philosophy NIDHAMU NA BIDII meant
- Highlighted to them the essence of Hard work plus working EXTRA for them to achieve their set objectives
- Above all they have to choose careers where they have bargaining power
- The speakers posited to the students how they want to be remembered when they leave Musingu.
- The key message from all was that to succeed, discipline is Paramount and they be Newsmakers and not Newsreaders
Min05/05/04/2014: Brief on MHS Alumni Registration and Way Forward
The Interim Vice Chairman, Collins Aseka gave members a detailed report on the progress. He gave members present copies of the Alumni Constitution and a copy of the Alumni Registration certificate too. Everything to do with the Alumni processes are well highlighted in the Alumni constitution. Members present agreed that since the Alumni is registered, we embark on getting a bank account in it’s name as soon as possible where members can pay in their registration and annual fees.
Min04/05/04/2014: Alumni Discussions on Key Initiatives
The following key areas were identified as ways in which the Alumni can engage with the school.
- Infrastructural Development
As one George Nyabera had stated, infrastructure is fundamental to the growth of any particular entity hence Musingu shouldn’t be left behind in this area. The Principal had earlier indicated his efforts, and as Old Boys he suggested to us we pick on the most viable project that we can fund to completion(matter is subject to more discussion later)
- Bursary Fund
Members agreed that we set up a fund that will enable us get the top but needy students through Musingu(Though already some individual Alumni are doing this noble initiative). Also members agreed that we should source for cooperate sponsors to see some needy cases through Musingu.
- Out of Kenya Networks
Members agreed that the students should be encouraged to perform better and our Diaspora Alumni source for them scholarship from crème dela crème Institutions out there. Already a number of our Old boys are in position to partake this wonderful step.
- Categorical Monthly Motivational Speakers
It was noted that a number of Old Boys are good public and motivational speakers who can inspire the boys for them to have change in their lives. It was agreed that during the Principal’s Talk every Saturday, any Alumni who is willing to give the boys’ a talk will be given a chance to do so.
