AWARDS.

Henry A. Jastro Research Scholarship Awards are awarded to outstanding graduate students in recognition of their potential to carry out research projects related to the missions of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences as outlined in written proposals. Announcement of awards are made by Graduate Group/Program Chairs to awardees. Students will be informed when the funds will be made available

The mission of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is:

· Develop students into scholars, mentors and responsible citizens of the state of California, the United States and the world:

· Advance, integrate, evaluate, and communicate knowledge of the sciences and technologies of natural resource utilization and conservation, agriculture, food, nutrition, human development, and related environmental, health, safety and policy concerns; and

· Seek out, anticipate, and lead in addressing the needs of citizens, communities, and governmental agencies, particularly in California.

The Ecology Graduate Group Student Endowment Research Awards are awarded to outstanding graduate students in recognition of their potential to carry out research projects related to their research, but are not in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

ELIGIBILITY. An applicant must:

·  Be a registered graduate student at UC Davis and plan to remain enrolled at UC Davis for the quarters immediately following receiving the award.

·  Student must be working under the direction of a Major Professor who has an appointment in a department housed in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. (Jastro-Shields Research Award)

·  Have a minimum GPA of 3.50.

·  The maximum combined amount a student may receive from a Henry A. Jastro Research Scholarship/GGE Research Award and a Humanities Graduate Research Award in one academic year is $3,000. The maximum number of years an applicant may receive a Henry A. Jastro Research Award/GGE Research Award is three.

·  Submit a Henry A. Jastro Research Scholarship/GGE Research Award Proposal.

PROPOSAL PREPARATION. Complete the application form. Write your proposal concisely for review by your Graduate Group/Program. The maximum length of the proposal is five double-spaced typewritten pages of text. The cover page, budget page and list of references are not included in this page limitation. Minimum type or font size is 12 point. Failure to follow page limitation and font size will result in disqualification of your proposal.

The proposal should include the following sections:

1. Title of proposal and summary (75-100 words)

2. Budget

·  Total cost of the project

·  Amount requested from Jastro-Shields/GGE Student Endowment Research Award

·  Proposed use of funds

·  A list all sources of support for the project. If more than $3,000 are required,

identify the source(s) of those funds.

Funds may be used for direct research costs including:

·  Travel, if necessary for the project

·  Supplies

·  Research equipment

·  Reproduction of documents

Funds may not be used for:

·  Travel to scholarly meetings

·  Preparation of thesis copy

·  Publication costs

·  Purchase of classroom books

·  Equipment not directly related to the research (including computers)

·  Salaries. Use of funds for salary is especially problematic and may have a negative effect on other financial aid and/or taxes.

3. Background and rationale

·  Why is this project needed?

·  What is new about it?

4. Identify specific objectives. If your study is part of a larger project, clearly indicate the general objective(s) of the larger project and what your proposed work adds to the overall project.

5. Procedures

·  How will the research be carried out?

·  How long will it take?

6. List of references cited in the text

7. Your personal qualifications to do the research

8. Signature. Your signature indicates that you prepared the proposal yourself and that you meet all the eligibility requirements.

9. Transcript of UC Davis graduate work.
