Schwarzsee, for the most relaxed family holidays
Schwarzsee Lake, covering an area of 0.5 km2, nestles romantically in the Fribourg Prealps, and is, like the village of the same name, part of the German-speaking Sense District. The lake shimmers turquoise, deep blue or jet black, depending on the light. Meadows and trees line the predominantly flat lakeshore, creating a magnificent contrast with the surrounding limestone mountains and rocky ridges. Schwarzsee is ideal for holidaymakers who want an active summer holiday in the mountains. It is a holiday destination that offers something for everyone, with beautiful hiking trails for children and adults alike, marked mountain bike routes, a cycle path with all-weather facilities, bathing, fishing, boat trips, summer tobogganing, grass karting and lots more besides. The Breccaschlund nature reserve, site of national importance, is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt Alpine valleys in Switzerland occupying a landscape clearly carved out by glaciers.
On the subject of ice: winter visitors to Schwarzsee come expecting a cold snap. The cold weather makes ice skating, ice hockey, cross-country skiing and walking simply twice as much fun on the frozen mountain lake! The relaxed Schwarzsee/Kaiseregg ski resort with its excellent facilities is ideal for families with children. Schwarzsee region also does its utmost to live up to its reputation as a family-friendly destination. Once upon a time… yes, there are a great many legends and fairytales about the Schwarzsee. Why is the lake so named? According to legend, the giant Gargantua washed his feet in the lake, blackening it forever.

Tips
Summer
The walk around Schwarzsee Lake takes approximately an hour and is easy, even with a pushchair or a wheelchair. A short detour leads to the grotto known as the “Dankesgrotte” and the 30 meter high waterfall. Children naturally prefer the Witch’s Trail (Häxewääg). The Tourist Office will give them a special witch’s set so that they are well equipped for any surprises they may encounter.
Winter
From Christmas until the beginning of March ice palaces, towers and grottos create a fairytale world of ice and light. The eternal beauty of these artworks fascinates children and adults. Pure magic!
