SECTION 321723–PAVEMENT MARKINGS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS
- Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2SUMMARY
- This Section includes:
- Pavement-marking paint.
- Glass beads.
1.3SUBMITTALS
- Product Data: For each product specified. Include technical data and tested physical and performance properties.
- LEED Submittals:
- Product Data for CreditMR4: For products having recycled content, manufacturer documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content.
- Include statement indicating costs for each product having recycled content.
- Product Data for Credit MR 5: For products and materials to comply with requirements for regional materials, provide documentation indicating location of product or material manufacturing location and the point of extraction, harvest, or recovery for each raw material.
- Include documentation on distance to project, contractor cost for each regional material, and percent by weight that is considered regional.
- Product Data for CreditIEQ4.2: For interior, field-applied, pavement-marking paints, documentation including printed statement of VOC content.
1.4DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
- Deliver pavement-marking materials to Project site in original packages with seals unbroken and bearing manufacturer's labels containing brand name and type of material, date of manufacture, and directions for storage.
- Store pavement-marking materials in a clean, dry, protected location and within temperature range required by manufacturer. Protect stored materials from direct sunlight.
- Glass Beads: Store glass beads in cool, dry place. Protect from contamination by foreign substances
1.5PROJECT CONDITIONS
- Pavement-Marking Paint: Unless otherwise recommended by paint manufacturer instructions, proceed with pavement marking only on clean, dry surfaces and at a minimum ambient or surface temperature of 40degF for oil-based materials, 55degF for water-based materials, and not exceeding 95degF.
- Volatile Organic Content (VOC). Do not exceed State or Environmental Protection Agency maximum VOC on traffic paint.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1PAVEMENT MARKING PAINT
- Pavement-Marking Paint: Latex, waterborne emulsion, lead and chromate free, ready mixed, complying with FSTT-P-1952, with drying time of less than 45 minutes.
- Color: Unless otherwise directed, provide the following:
- Yellow for general parking lot striping, and where indicated or directed.
- White for road lane designation, and where indicated or directed.
- Blue for handicap accessible parking and symbols.
- Glass Beads: Where required, glass beads shall meet AASHTO M247, Type 1, coated to enhance embedment and adherence with paint.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1EXAMINATION
- Verify that pavement is dry and in suitable condition to begin pavement marking according to manufacturer's written instructions.
- Proceed with pavement marking only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2PAVEMENT MARKING
- Do not apply pavement-marking paint until layout, colors, and placement have been verified with Owner or Owner’s Representative.
- Allow paving to cure for 30 days before starting pavement marking.
- Sweep and clean surface to eliminate loose material and dust.
- Apply paint with mechanical equipment to produce pavement markings of dimensions indicated with uniform, straight edges. Apply at manufacturer's recommended rates to provide a minimum wet film thickness of 15 mils.
- Apply graphic symbols and lettering with paint-resistant, die-cut stencils, firmly secured to pavement. Mask an extended area beyond edges of each stencil to prevent paint application beyond the stencil. Apply paint so that it cannot run beneath the stencil.
- Apply glass beads at rate of 6 pounds per gallon of paint.
