WS 2: remote access & culture techniques workshop (OOB): 11-14 October, 2010 at the Observatoire Océanologique in Banyuls, FR.

This workshop is primarily aimed at persons technically involved in the following topics:

·  Provision of multicellular organisms

·  Culture of marine protists and cell lines

·  Remote access to biological marine resources

As you will see in the attached program, each aspect will be addressed in specific round tables and a very short talk will introduce each topic in order to give the maximum space to discussion.

Please inform your lab colleagues if you think they could be interested to attend this workshop.

Costs: 2 ASSEMBLE participants per site will pay for travel only (from their own ASSEMBLE account), additional ASSEMBLE participants and non-ASSEMBLE participants pay also for meals and accommodation.

Remarks on the program:

Monday : Travel to Banyuls-sur-Mer. Please do not book flights that arrive late in the afternoon/evening, if possible. In an attached file I provide information on the different ways to come to Banyuls either from Perpignan, Barcelona or Girona.

For those arriving early in the afternoon a tour of OOB facilities will be organized. Another visit will be planed during the workshop upon request.

Thursday : Travel back. Please do not book early flights in order to attend the scheduled morning session.

Social program will include a visit of the biodiversarium and a local wine cellar etc…

ACCESS TO BANYULS

From Barcelona Airport to Banyuls by train (about 3 to 4hrs)

Inside the Barcelona airport, go to the train station and directly by a ticket to Port-Bou, the last Spanish village before the French border or to Cerbère, the first French village after the border (about 10€).

From Airport get the train to Barcelona Sants. There are train departures every 30 mins approx. It takes 20 minutes.

In Barcelona Sants you have to change and take the train to Port-Bou.

Barcelona Sants is the main Barcelona train station, so you can find buffet etc.. but usually you have to go up and down to change of platform.

Another possibility is to leave the Airport-Barcelona shuttle in Passeig de Gracia, the next train station, and to take the train to Port-Bou/Cerbère from the same platform.

Then a taxi with prices negociated with our Institute can bring you from Port-Bou to Banyuls (Direction to Avenue du Fontaulé, 66650 Banyuls-sur-Mer / 30-45 €).

From Barcelona airport by car

217km – about 2 hours 28 mins

From airport take the direction to Barcelona

You are on a highway

At about 4km take the ramp to Barcelona/Ronda de Dalt/Tarragona/Lleida/Girona

Continue onto Ronda de Dalt (signs for B-20/Barcelona/Avinguda Diagonal/Girona)

About 15-25 mins

Then follow signs Girona, France, (sometimes Montpellier) staying on the highway. The number of the highway is A7 (sometimes AP-7).

You will pass Girona (km 120, Figueras km 150)

Stay on the highway till the French border (La Jonquera-Le Perthus, km 170)

Then stay on the same highway (called A9 in that case) for only a few kms and take exit 43-Le Boulou toward Argelès-sur-Mer/Port-Vendres

[You will have to pay the highway twice in Spain, once about 3€ going out of Barcelona, then you take a ticket and pay about 10 € before the French border and finally about 3€ for the small part in France.]

Then follow Argelès-sur-Mer/Port-Vendres

You will be on D618 for about 15 min

After a roundabout turn on the right to take the direction Collioure/Port-Vendres, you will be on the D914.

Let Collioure on the left; when you arrive close to Port-Vendres the road become smaller after a roundabout, don’t enter Port-Vendres remain on the same road till Banyuls, about 7 km later.

Arriving in Banyuls the road go up till a big red house on the left and then down to the city center. You will remark across the bay, on your left a very big white building: it’s the lab! Follow on the same road till this building, it’s also the direction Cerbère.

Stop in front of the building, there is a big panel Aquarium.

From Girona airport to Banyuls (about 3hrs)

Girona Airport is located just 18 Km from Girona city. Buses, operated by "Sagales", connect the airport to Girona. The bus journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes and costs €2.50 one way. The bus stop is located outside arrivals. Alternatively, there is a taxi rank outside arrivals. A taxi to Girona takes approximately 15-20 minutes and costs €20-25.

Train Girona-Port-Bou

Then a taxi with prices negociated with our Institute can bring you from Port-Bou to Banyuls.

Direct taxi course from Girona airport to Banyuls can also be arranged for groups.

From Perpignan Airportto Banyuls

·  Depending of the number of persons arriving together at the airport we will arrange transfer with OOB mini-bus, in other cases

Day arrival: a train transfer takes 1-2 hrs:

Take a shuttle from the airport to the train station and then a train from Perpignan to Banyuls sur Mer.

Night arrival:

You must reserve a taxi which will bring you from the airport to Banyuls.

Prices have been negotiated with “Taxi Patrick”, please let us know in advance if you need booking.

From Perpignan to Banyuls by car (40 min):

Arriving from the north by motorway, live the Motorway A9 at the exit “Perpignan-sud”.

Take the direction Argelès sur Mer, you will pass several roundabouts and finally take the D914.

Stay on this road leaving Argelès and Collioure on your left.

When you arrive close to Port-Vendres the road become smaller; after a roundabout, don’t enter Port-Vendres remain on the same road till Banyuls, about 7 km later.

Arriving in Banyuls you pass a roundabout, take the road on the left. This road goes up till a big red house on the left and then down to the city center. You will remark across the bay, on your left a very big white building: it’s the lab! Follow on the same road till this building, it’s also the direction Cerbère.
