Description:

This inter-active workshop aims to provide information and a discussion platform on the basic principlesof psychopharmacology forpsychotherapists. The workshop will cover a wide range of material, including basic physiology of the brain, the key concepts of pharmacology, the different classes of psychiatric medications, their side effects and implications for the psychotherapeutic relationship.

Very often psychotherapists see clients who are taking psychotropic medications and indeed mayoften see these clients more frequently than primary care physicians. The number of clients being prescribed medication is increasing. Psychotherapistsare often in a position to recognize some of the desirable and undesirable effects of these medications and also occupya holding role when the client is coming off medication. Medications covered will include drugs used for anxiety, sleep, depression, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. Alternative non-prescribed medications will also be included.

Discussion of the above will form the basis for the workshop and clinical material is encouraged throughout the workshop. A handout will be provided on the day and a number of articles will be sent to participants online.
