Instructor Notes:

·  Instructors recommend using padded bicycling shorts, which can be purchased at any bike shop. Wicking style undergarments are also recommended. Normal shorts may be worn over the bike shorts.

·  The first couple days will be spent out of uniform. Instructors recommend students use a wicking-style T-shirt that can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. Cotton T-shirts can be uncomfortable on long rides and/or hot days.

·  Hydration systems (such as Camelbak) are recommended on hot days. Some of the rides are long and inaccessible to water supply. Water bottles will not be provided, so if you choose to not bring a hydration system, at least bring a bicycle water bottle. Regular water bottles will fall out while riding over rough terrain and create a potentially serious hazard for the group.

·  Proper bicycling shoes reduce fatigue and injury, however many bicycle shoes are not appropriate for patrol use. Instructors recommend purchasing a bike shoe that is similar to a cross trainer. Most bike shops can direct you to a good shoe if you ask. You may also contact any of the instructors for assistance.

·  The prerequisite for the course is good fitness levels and basic bicycle knowledge. If you have not been riding regularly, please start preparing for the course. If you do not have access to a mountain bike, see an instructor for assistance. If you do, please start riding. The class can be a lot of fun for those who are prepared, yet it can also be a very tiring and frustrating course for those who are not prepared.

·  Most of the rides will have a van following for safety. Lunches may be stored in the van, however daily stops will be made for lunch. Energy bars are also permitted.
