Course Information & Definitions

Aeration Holes

Through the green, a ball that comes to rest in or on an aeration hole may be lifted without penalty, cleaned and placed within 6 inches of where it originally lay but not nearer the hole.

On the putting green, a ball that comes to rest in or on aeration hole may be placed at the nearest spot not nearer the hole that avoids the situation.

Aeration Plugs

Through the green, aeration plugs are loose impediments and may be removed without penalty.

Cart Paths

All cart paths and service roads are deemed to be obstructions from which a player is entitled to relief without penalty.

Washed out areas at end of paved cart paths or adjacent to cart paths or service roads are to be considered part of the cart path/service road even if not so marked.

Embedded Ball

Through the green, a ball that is embedded in its own pitch-mark may be lifted without penalty, cleaned and dropped as near as possible to where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball must first strike part of the course through the green. (Appendix 1, Part A, Local Rule, 3a)

Ground Under Repair

(Definition) - Ground under repair is any part of the course marked by the Committee or by its authorized representative.

All ground and any grass, bush, tree or other growing thing with the GUR are part of the GUR. Ground under repair includes material piled for removal and a hole made by a greens keeper, even not so marked. Grass cuttings and other material left on the course that are abandoned and are not intended to be removed are not ground under repair unless so marked (i.e. tree clippings, grass clippings left in tree-line for compost). A ball is in the GUR when it lies in or any part of it touches the ground under repair.

(Application) - Defined by white lines or ropes with appropriate signs. French drains and drainage ditches are deemed to be ground under repair even if unmarked. All flower beds are mandatory ground under repair. Drop area for the flower beds at the 17th green is beyond the green (10 yards past back left edge of green). “It must be known or virtually certain” by the players that ball is in GUR, if unsure rule 27 (Lost Ball- stroke & distance penalty) applies.

Through the green, sod seams (not the sod itself) are deemed to be ground under repair, even if not so marked.

If the ball lies in or touches a sod seam or the seam interferes with the area of intended swing, free relief is available under Rule 25-1. (Note: no relief for interference with stance only). All seams within the cut turf area are considered to be the same seam.

Preferred lies

If a player’s ball lies on their own fairway, the player may mark, lift and clean the ball without penalty.

Before lifting, the player must mark the position of the ball. The player must then place the ball on a spot within six inches of and not near the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard or on a putting green.

A player may place their ball only once, and it is in play when it has been placed

Stones in Bunkers

Stones, rocks and acorns in bunkers are movable obstructions and may be removed prior to making a stroke without penalty. The stone, rock or acorn must be in the path of your intended swing.

Distance Measuring Devices

For all play at this course, a player may obtain information by use of a distance-measuring device.

If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect their play (e.g. elevation changes, wind speed etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3.

Accumulations of Leaves through the Green

The Golf Shop in conjunction with Superintendent may declare an accumulation of leaves through the green at certain holes or at all holes to be ground under repair. In this situation Rule 25-1 (Abnormal Ground Conditions) will apply. This local rule must be declared by the Golf Shop and withdrawn as soon as conditions permit. “It must be known or virtually certain” by the players that ball is lost in accumulation of leaves, otherwise ball must be treated as lost elsewhere on course and Rule 27 (Ball Lost- stroke & distance penalty) applies.

Through the Green is the whole are of the course except: the teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played; and all hazards on the course.

Stipulated Round

The stipulated round consists of playing the holes of the course in their correct sequence unless otherwise authorized by the Committee. The number of holes in a stipulated round is 18 unless a smaller number is authorized by the Committee.
