Course Description
The overall objective of this course is to look at various topics within five major cultures of the world. We will examine these five cultures: the Middle East, India, China, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa. Within the context of each culture we will focus on geography, social structure, economy, religion, philosophy, modernization, art, music, literature, and government. An emphasis will be placed on the 20th century for each of these cultures. Each unit will be approximately seven weeks in length.
Required Materials
Each student is required to bring a 3-ring binder, charged iPad, and a pencil to class each day. Each student will be issued a textbook and novels, but textbooks do not have to be brought to class.
Grading Procedures
Grades will be calculated as follows:
Graded Assignments (class work, quizzes and homework)40%
Tests (tests, projects and essays)60%
Late Work Policy
GradedAssignments will not be accepted late, however allowances will be made for excused absences. Projects and essays that are considered test grades will be accepted up to one week late, with a 10% penalty per day.
iPad Guidelines
iPads are for educational use. No games are to be played in class at any time. iPads should be away unless we are using them in class. Improperly used digital devices will be placed in “Digital Detention” for the remainder of the period. Repeated offenses will result in disciplinary action.
Student Responsibilities
If a student is absent, it is her responsibility to find out what she missed and make it up within twice the number of days that she was absent. If a student is absent on a test or quiz day, he must make up the test or quiz during class on the day that he returns to school. Major projects and papersare due on the assigned date regardless of absence.
Academic Integrity
All students are expected to adhere to the standards outlined in the handout “Academic Integrity at Penncrest High School.” All assignments are to be completed individually unless otherwise indicated. Students who violate the standards of academic integrity will receive no credit for the assignment(s) in question and may face disciplinary action.
