Grove Chess Club

Information for Parents: 2014-2015

Grove Chess Club exists to allow children to learn and enjoy chess while experiencing healthy competition and team spirit. Chess is used to develop critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and competitive maturity. All Grove Gators are invited to be a part of the Grove Chess Club.

1.  Please keep this information for reference throughout the year.

2.  Club meetings are on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:00 pm beginning November 6th, 2014 to March 20th- 2015.

3.  Children are strongly encouraged to attend several chess tournaments.

4.  Please watch for E-Mails, these are the primary source for updates throughout the year.

5.  If Unit 5 after school activities are cancelled for inclement weather, chess club will be cancelled.

Parent Volunteers:

Parents are our greatest asset. Without your help, chess club cannot exist. Help needed for: setup, takedown, lesson/child supervision, coaching. Please see: Volunteer Description and Responsibilities.

Dues:

Please refer to the Registration form for the fee details. Payable at registration or prior to/at the first club meeting.

At Home Recommended Study:

1.  Book and software reading with your child; ten minutes a day, goes a long way!

2.  Chess notation allows children to review and learn from games they have played.

Student Pickup: Drop Off / Pick up: North entrance of the building. To assure student safety, positive transfer to the parent or caregiver is required. Please park in the North Lot and come inside to sign out and pickup.

USCF: USCF Membership is required for tournaments for players in second grade and up. Please join or renew now to ensure eligibility in the tournaments. Contact: http://uschess.org or Ph: (845) 561-2437.

·  JTP membership (K-1) is only available at scholastic tournaments and is no cost to the player.

·  Scholastic membership includes a magazine for $23.00/year.

·  Scholastic Economy costs $16.00/year (no magazine).

·  Family memberships for multiple children under 25 are $44 (includes magazine subscription).

·  There will be a new membership option in January for $8 (3 months, includes magazine subscription).

Tournaments: Sign up is required no later than the end of Chess Club on the Thursday prior to the tournament as they often fill very quickly. We sign up as a team in order to simplify the process. Make checks to “Grove Chess Club”. Deliver to chess store volunteer OR Satish Parupati as soon as possible after the tournament is announced.
