Ref lesson plan 1 - introduction / This unit helps learners to familiarise themselves with the more advanced aspects of digital media skills for the creative and media sector. It allows them to understand the client brief and time frames and deadlines and preparation techniques to form part of the project planning and creation process.
Introduction to MAPS

Digital media research
3–6 hours / Teaching activity to investigate the range of digital media types, where they are used and who is the target audience
Group exercise: to research and discuss a range of target platforms and how media is disseminated
Homework: to search and collect a range of digital media / Sample materials and digital media
For rating of digital media – use the ocr planning and evaluation template which has a rating table included at the back.

The target platforms will range from simply audio to full video and animation and the learners should be able to identify the required medium and formats as appropriate to the client brief and the audience.

Working with still images
7–14 hours / Teaching activity: features of image editing software applications (identifying what is available)
Teaching activity: to identify what tools and techniques of the software is used to edit and repurpose images and graphics
Teaching activity: to identify compressed and uncompressed file formats together with their properties, limitations, advantages and disadvantages
Teaching activity: using asset logs
Exercise: to edit and repurpose a range of images and graphics for sample activities (not the final assignment brief)
Homework: to find a number of still images in different formats for use in class
Teaching activity: developing and using test plans for digital media / Sample materials – a range of high and low resolution images and graphics such as:
An a4 print image at 300dpi (with 3508 x 2480 pixels)
A cd cover image at 300 dpi (since for print) with 1425 x 1425 pixels ie 4.75” square
A web image at 72dpi (with 800 x 600 pixels)
A web banner at 72dpi (with 600 x 160 pixels)

Appropriate compression techniques and types of compression;
How to achieve small file-sizes and low data-transfer rates while maintaining asset quality;
Image file types eg tif, psd, jpg, png, gif
Workflow processes to include for example, file naming, album organisation, rating, sorting, tagging, stacking and image processing techniques
Only basic editing and processing techniques need to be evidenced for this unit since the primary aim is about the process and workflow.
Testing will vary for each asset type and learners should use appropriate format and potentially platforms to test.
Working with video
15–22 hours / Teaching activity: features of video editing software applications (identifying what is available)
Teaching activity: to identify what tools and techniques of the software is used to edit and repurpose video and other moving image media clips
Teaching activity: to identify compressed and uncompressed file formats together with their properties, limitations, advantages and disadvantages
Teaching activity: using asset logs
Exercise: to edit and repurpose a range of video and moving image clips for sample activities (not the final assignment brief)
Homework: to find a number of short video clips for use in class (may be sourced online or recorded using a compact digital camera for example)
Teaching activity: developing and using test plans for digital media / Sample materials – a range of moving image files in different file formats and resolutions such as:
Video files in .avi, .mov, .mpeg, and .flv

Appropriate compression techniques and types of compression;

Teaching activity: using asset logs
Exercise: to edit and repurpose a range of audio files for sample activities (not the final assignment brief)
Homework: to find a number of short audio clips for use in class (may be sourced online or recorded using a digital recorder or microphone and computer for example)
Teaching activity: developing and using test plans for digital media / Sample materials – a range of audio files such as music, voiceovers and event sounds
Audio files to be in both .wav and .mp3 formats as a minimum

Project planning software
Use of sample materials: to plan a response to a sample client brief (not the final assignment)

Narrative or annotated document that covers relevant techniques for audio, still image and moving image assets. For example, compression techniques, audio bit depth, volume, image pixel dimensions, resolution, moving image video format, pixel dimensions, file formats
The digital workflow to cover the recording/capture, editing and storage of the assets and final work, including any working file formats and how these differ from the requirements of the end user.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of copyright, trademarks and intellectual property use
How to create a project plan
38–41 hours / Teaching activity: how to create project plans with tasks, timescales and resources
Identify factors that affect production and planning, including key stages, constraints and contingencies
Exercise: to create a project plan that identifies workflow, timescales and resources involved in converting each of the different types of digital media files / Work plan may be created using dedicated project planning software

Plans should include a series of linked tasks, the durations for each (in hours: minutes format) and the dates of the activities from start to finish

Obtain feedback from the client and/or the target audience
Identify parameters and constraints that influenced decisions made. For example asset manipulation, file formats, compression techniques, permission and subject matter/location, copyright, ipr, trademarks etc
Maintain accurate written records of relevant information about assets obtained, such as source, ownership, any restrictions on use, where they are located, filenames given
