Faculty Assembly Minutes

November 19, 2013

Dr. Staples called meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.

Dr. Judy Hughey moved approval of minutes from October 22 meeting, seconded by Dr. White. Minutes stand approved as read.

Standing Committee Reports

A.  Academic Affairs – Dr. Burenheide

There are 2 courses that we’d like to add from the Ed. Leadership department. Moved for approval by Dr. Burenheide, seconded by Dr. Thurston. Courses are approved. Academic Affairs will meet in December. If your course proposals please contact me (today) so we can plan to present your proposals at our next meeting.

B. Faculty Affairs – Dr. Lane

Please submit your nominations by Dec. 1st for the Michael C. Holen Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award.

C. Student Affairs – Dr. Larson

We are currently reviewing nominations for awards. Please consider attending the Graduate Lunch. If you will be attending let Pam know. The College will be collecting food from Thanksgiving through Christmas in the Dean’s office. Food donations will also go to the COE Food Pantry. The College of Education Research Journal will be supported. The Research Poster Fair will be taking place in March.

D. Diversity for Community – No report

E. Technology – Dr. Knackendoffel

The iPad refresher sessions are upcoming. We’ve purchased 150 iPads that will be ready for Block 1 and Block A in the spring. The POLL group met yesterday, November 18, and discussed student accessibility in an online teaching environment.

Other reports

A.  Faculty Senate – Dr. Knackendoffel

Pam will send the electronic report this morning. Still deciding how to work with the budget cuts and communicate this to the legislators. Academic Affairs approved policies for Graduate Certificate programs; these will be posted soon. The Technology committee will be migrating to 365 by January 6. If you have not deleted e-mails as of today they will be transferred to 365 and you can wait for January 6 to clean out your mail folders.

B.  Graduate Council – Dr. Taylor

The annual review of graduate students has been sent back to the subcommittee for continued discussion. There weren’t any nominations from the COE for excellence in Graduate Teaching, please consider this for the spring.

C.  EGSO – Dr. Burden

There was a program this past week about writing for publication. Thank you to Drs. Ken Hughey and Lotta Larson for speaking. Early February will be another program on the topic of professional organizations.

D.  Continuing Education – Rosemary Boggs

There are 95 courses for the COE this spring. A task force is across campus discussing how to get some research topics started from the Division of Continuing Education.

E.  Education Council – Darla Stone

We have a new exciting and energetic president. There is a meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m., in BH21. Open House is April 5, and our theme is “Where Our Story Meets Yours.”

F.  Center for Student and Professional Services – Dr. Griffin

The digital signage is up. Students will be able to make academic advising appointments online rather than having to come in to set up an appointment. Dr. Griffin recognized and thanked those faculty who traveled around the state to help with recruitment.

G.  NACADA – Dr. Nut

An annual report and the Center’s mission/vision statements were distributed to attendees. We’ve been looking at data on graduation rates. According the Lumina Foundation Report Kansas is sitting at 40.7% and working hard in order to increase this number. It is estimated if the current trend continues we will be at 47.8% by 2025. The goal is to increase the number of graduates to 60% by 2025. Faculty and staff have been looking at diversity issues and globally, and continue to do lots of international travel. We are located on the 2nd floor of the Foundations Building, Everyone is welcome to come and visit us.

H.  Library – Laura

Please let me know if you’d like us to come talk with your students about research. Contact us early for your graduate and undergraduate classes.

Announcements

·  Dr. Burden announced that BH119 is available for use. Highlights of the room were shared. The elevators are 34 years old and needing more frequent service. Working with the University to replace them.

Dean’s Report – Dr. Thurston

·  Congratulations to Dr. Royce Ann Collins, named as the Editor of the Journal of Continuing Education.

·  Congratulations to Dr. Rick Doll, named as Superintendent of Lawrence Public Schools.

·  Molly Hamm, graduate in Secondary Education (English), is the distinguished young scholar.

·  Chad Clark has been named as our Alumni Fellow. He will be here April 2014.

·  There is a 2% mid-year salary increase.

·  There is a student research journal out of Dr. Thurston’s office. There is competition to “Name that Journal”. The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate for the Union, or gift certificate for ice cream from Call Hall.

·  We’ve done more than $100,000 for internal funding.

·  Dr. Thurston is putting a list of funding sources on the research website.

·  Dr. Emmalou Norland is coming in December to speak about education research proposals.
