Free Training and Technical Assistance Opportunities
- Summer Site Visits Explained
If you have a summer program, you may be hearing from both Education Northwest and Phyllis Guile from ODE about scheduling site visits. The goals of the visits are distinct: Phyllis’s visits are program observations for ODE, and Education Northwest’s visits are optional in-person technical assistance consultations (which may also include observations). EdNW is also available to visit in the fall.
- Reminder: KIT Online Learning Center Access and Forum Pilot
As shared at the Spring Conference, current Oregon 21st CCLC grantees can access the Kids Included Together (KIT) Online Learning Center to find information and resources on a range of inclusion topics. Each grantee has been given a set number of passes for staff to access the site.
To access your account:

- For the Organization field, select your school district or organization from the drop-down menu. Your organization group can be found in the KIT drop-down menu under these titles:

In July, Oregon pass holders can help pilot a new discussion feature on the Online Learning Center. Participating in the pilot means that you will get to test the features and provide feedback. This feature will be rolled out to KIT pass holders around the world in the fall of 2014.

New Research and Resources
- Strategies to Promote Non-Cognitive Skills: A Guide for Youth Developers and Educators. A new guide to resources from Public Profit for building skills in five key areas: Academic Behaviors, Academic Mindsets, Academic Perseverance, Learning Strategies, and Social Skills. This guide is a useful snapshot of available curricula, activities and approaches for promoting non-cognitive skills.
- Check out the latest issue of Afterschool Matters. The spring 2014 issue contains brief articles on promising practices on topics of interest to 21stCCLC sites, such as gender-specific programming and STEM.
- New Resources for supporting ELL students
The Center on Instruction has a repository of materials and resources for English Language Learners that help educators improve academic outcomes for diverse learners and those diverse learners with learning disabilities.
- Oregon Piloting Bilingual Diploma Seals
Oregon is among several states piloting a program to include bilingual seals on students’ high school diplomas if they demonstrate proficiency in English and Spanish. A June 28 article in the San Jose Mercury News provides additional details.
- New report on Suspension and Expulsion Patterns in Six Oregon School Districts
Findings from a study conducted by REL Northwest of six Oregon school districts show that minority students are more likely to be suspended or expelled than their White peers. Additionally, male and special education students are disciplined more frequently than their peers. The study resulted from a request by the Oregon Leadership Network Behavioral Practices Task Force.
- Out of School Time STEM Survey
Oregon ASK and the Afterschool Alliance are conducting a survey to gather data on Oregon out-of-school programs that offer STEM opportunities, with the goal of capturing a comprehensive picture of informal STEM in Oregon. See the Oregon ASK website for more details.
Funding Opportunities
- GreenWorks! Environmental Service Learning Project Grants
A small-grants program that supports service-learning programs with a conservation or environmental improvement focus. The deadline for the next round of grants is September 30. More information is available online.
