BIG MOTORHOME SPACE FOR A SMALL VAN PRICE
FROM TRAKKA’S NEW FIAT DUCATO TORINO
The Fiat Ducato-based Trakka Torino offers big motorhome space and luxury for the price of a small campervan filling both a size and price gap between the smaller campervans and the full size motorhomes.
“The Fiat Ducato is a remarkable vehicle on which to base a motorhome,” says Martin Poate, General Manager at Trakka, Australia’s leading luxury motor home specialists. “Although it is small enough to park in a normal parking space and is as easy to drive as a car, its excellent space and dimensions has enabled us to build a motorhome with all the features expected of a much larger vehicle. Added to this is the powerful and economic JTD engine which provides outstanding performance and economy, as well as low emissions and a chassis that provides a safe and secure drive.”
“But the big surprise is price. At less than $80,000, the Trakka Torino is the same price as the top end conversions based on one-tonne payload vehicles that don’t have all the features of the Torino. And to get the same features in a full size van would cost another $30,000. Not only does the Torino plug an obvious gap in the market, it will also, we believe, attract people from the small vans who want the features but not the price of large van and pull people out of large vans who want to keep all the features, but have a vehicle that is easy and convenient to drive,” says Mr Poate.
As well as basic interior volume – 12 cubic metres in the donor vehicle – the major two-dimensional advantages of the Ducato are its internal height, which is sufficient so as not to require any form of pop-top, as in the smaller vans, and its internal width, which is greater than some of its large van competitors. Added to this is the fact that the entire drivetrain is ahead of the front seats, Trakka has been able to free up interior space by placing equipment under the floor.
This means that features such as a bathroom with shower and toilet that often have to be outside in small van conversion are inside the Torino. There is even space for a stylish wooden slat floor in the bathroom, along with a vanity unit with hot and cold water, storage cupboards. The kitchen area is remarkable for its amount of work top space, as well as the sink with a draining area, the later left out on some conversions for space reasons, and a three-burner stove. A large 85 litre fridge and a standard microwave oven complete the kitchen.
Swivel the front seats and install the table and there is room for up to five people to sit inside the Torino, while conversion to a comfortable double bed is quick and easy. Even with the bed in place, there is still walk through access to the kitchen and the bathroom, making the Torino an extremely livable motorhome.
Storage areas abound, from drawers and cupboards around the kitchen area, to hanging space by the door for jackets, large drawers under the main seats for linen and bedding which are accessible even when the bed is in place, to outside accessible storage areas from the rear barn doors.
Luxury is very much the name of the game in the Torino and this is self-evident immediately the power operated step is activated by the wide opening sliding door. The floor area is split into two areas, with a hardwearing, easily cleanable floor in the walk through areas and quality carpet in all the sitting areas. The interior is trimmed in cherry veneer laminated plywood, for both good looks and durability, and the roof and sides of the Torino are full trimmed. In addition to the standard microwave, bathroom, hot and cold water, the optional equipment also includes the latest in entertainment with a DVD powered Plasma screen TV with surround sound. The driving environment is no less well equipped with central locking, electric windows, power steering and the door mirrors even have additional side view mirrors to aid parking.
