Native American Heritage Month
UC San Diego celebrates Native American Heritage Month in November. We honorNative American scholars and recognize their academic achievements to support equity, diversity and inclusion. The kick-off event was a luncheon held on Thursday, November 2nd. The keynote speaker Bridget Ann Neconie, Director of the Cobell Scholarships, has served as the Assistant Director of the Office of Undergraduate Admission at the University of California, Berkeley, and has been a Gates Millennium Scholarship Reader and Trainer for the past 12 years.Proceeds from the luncheon benefit an Intertribal Resource Center (ITRC) Scholarship to support Native students at UCSD.
Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence
UC San Diego campus members have been invited to give input into the development of the Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. The plan was announced at a Town Hall meeting in October led by the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. The speakers included Chancellor Khosla, Executive Vice
Chancellor Elizabeth Simmons, Vice Chancellor Becky Petitt, Associate Vice Chancellor Dianne Forbes Berthoud and Dean Bill McGinnis, all who reaffirmed the university’s commitment to excellence in diversity and encouraged campus members to get involved and provide feedback. The many ways to participate are detailed on the Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence website.
Hosting the Council of UC Staff Assemblies
CUCSA held its quarterly meeting at UC San Diego in September 2017.Delegates from the 10 UC campuses, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California Office of the President, and Agriculture and National Resources attended. At a special welcome reception at the Martin Johnson House, Chancellor Khosla thanked the Council members for their hard work and dedication to the University, and emphasized the importance of the Council’s role in being a voice for staff across the system.
Post-retirement health benefits
UC San Diego Staff Association Chair Elect Jackie Holmes, spoke at the UC Regents Board meetings in September and November 2017 during the Public Comment Section. She addressed pending changes to post-retirement health benefits and encouraged the Regents to consider the impact on staff recruitment, retention, and morale as they make decisions regarding future benefits.
