§ Primary role is to provide design of Soil-Steel structures (such as Multi-plate, Bridge-Plate, Terraspan, Bin-Walls, etc.)
§ Secondary role is to provide design of architectural and structural precast concrete.
§ Perform design and technical support of CIA products (precast, steel and plastic).
§ Check design notes and drawings as performed by others
§ Provide mentoring and training as required
§ Initiate and champion process improvement initiatives
§ Work closely with fellow staff to expedite the design/drafting of all standard/custom infrastructure products
§ Work with the Richmond Engineering staff on other miscellaneous projects and ES products as directed.
§ Occasional travel will be required between the Surrey and Richmond office. Site visits and client meetings will also occur on a weekly basis.
§ Project manage multiple projects as required
§ Provide design support to the following areas: (1) Projects, (2) Production, (3) Sales, (4) Construction, & (5) Process improvement. Project management and design support will encompass the majority of work. Production needs, along with Sales and Construction are often random and can dramatically change throughout the year. The final area of design support is with process improvement, and will require involvement in a variety of specific initiatives.
§ Supervise design and drafting staff as required
§ While providing support, one must constantly measure their work against the following criteria: (A) Safety, (B) Quality, (C) Speed, (D) Cost & (E) Sustainability.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES
§ Projects: Apply engineering knowledge and judgment to the design of complicated or involved elements and structures, and ensure that designs are correctly incorporated into the production and construction drawings.
§ Projects: Design requirements for precast structures include: primary reinforcing/prestressing, connections, hardware, handling (stripping, dunnage, transportation and installation), shortening, camber, deflections & stresses.
§ Projects: Monitor the preparation of production and field drawings on all work that you have designed to ensure that your designs have been properly incorporated into the working drawings. Review and stamp these drawings as per company policy prior to use.
§ Projects: Visit the plant and the job sites on assigned projects as necessary to monitor that the production and erection of the elements is in accordance with design requirements.
§ Projects: Attend pre-job, post-job, value engineering and potential problem analysis meetings on request. Ensure that the value engineering process takes place on all assigned projects.
§ Projects: Communicate with the project consultants as necessary to resolve discrepancies or omissions within the consultant’s drawings and other documents. Keep in the engineering file complete and dated records of verbal and written communications with both outside parties and other armtec departments. Constantly look to identify opportunities (to capitalize) and problems (to avoid). Immediately bring to the attention of all appropriate parties any issues that will adversely affect costs or schedules.
§ Production: Prepare calculations, repair procedures, and fabrication advice as needed. Perform plant inspections on an annual basis or if items of concern are identified. Provide engineering help to the production department for facility and equipment modifications (spreader bars, buckets, abutments, compression struts…) and for product “trouble shooting”.
§ Sales: Provide innovative design input to the sales and marketing group for project development and product development. Preliminary designs for typical projects and sales assistance.
§ Construction: Provide engineering support to the construction group as needed.
AUTHORITY
§ To have personnel cease work, when in his/her judgment, the structural adequacy of a component or the safety of an individual is in question.
§ To have personnel cease work if the drawings/designs are not being followed.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITES
§ Safety: Support the armtec Safety program. Ensure that all engineering decisions give due consideration of the safety of armtec personnel and the public at large.
§ Quality: Provide quality service and product to all internal and external customers/partners. Support the armtec Quality System and comply with all company procedures and policies. Produce smart, practical designs in an organized and timely fashion. Be a promoter of the armtec Quality System, acting as Supervising Engineer when required, and ensuring that all design and drafting activities on assigned projects meet the requirements of the program. Perform the function of “P.Eng.” as stipulated by the Canadian Standards Association with respect to the C.S.A. certification program. Prepare design notes in a neat and orderly manner for use by the draftsmen and as a permanent record. Have design reviewed by others in accordance with the appropriate clauses of the armtec QSM (Quality System Manual).
§ Speed: Strive to provide design services and support in a timely fashion, meeting and beating scheduled dates and customer expectations. Identify items that may impact a project schedule and work towards sorting out details in logical order so to expedite design and drafting services. The total speed of the entire process will govern over an individual department or specific process.
§ Cost: Through the process of value engineering, work with the Operating departments to find the most cost effective combination of: schedule, design, production, handling, transportation, and erection solutions for assigned projects.
§ Ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with armtec policies and procedures
§ Perform all engineering activities in accordance with the requirements of the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia, and maintain membership in this Association.
§ Provide engineering services to the Pacific region, and other regions on request.
