COMMITTEE NAME: Diversity in IP Law

DISCUSS THE OVERALL MISSION OF THE COMMITTEE AS IT RELATES TO AIPLA’s VISION, MISSION, and VALUES:

Our committee’s mission is to increase the diversity of IP lawyers both in the IP field generally and as members of AIPLA. We seek to give diverse IP attorneys an opportunity to excel by providing our members with the opportunity to increase their legal skills and overall visibility within AIPLA and the law community as a whole by encouraging involvement in the substantive committees of AIPLA.

PROJECTS:

Plans for stated meetings:

At the Mid-Winter 2016 Meeting, we will host a Fun Run and Metabolic Blast Class (sponsored by Baker Botts) on Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 am. Attendees will have the option of running the back nine of the La Quinta Resort golf course or joining a Metabolic Blast Class. After working out, attendess can network with colleagues over a healthy breakfast.

On Friday, January 30th, we also will have a joint committee session with the Copyright Law, Industrial Designs, Law Practice Management, Mentoring, New Lawyers, Trademark Internet, Trademark Law, Trademark Ltiigation, Trademark Treaties and International Law, and Trademark-Reations with the USPTO Committees. During this session there will be a panel discussion about how to become more involved in AIPLA followed by a networking reception.

Plans for coordination between stated meetings: We have scheduled telephone conferences the third Tuesday of every other month.

PUBLIC EDUCATION: We are developing a program on careers in IP Law, AIPLA, how to become more involved in AIPLA, and the scholarships available through AIPLEF. We plan to role this out to schools in the Spring 2016.

MEMBER SERVICE: We are implementing a speaker bank for our committee members via a survey available on our committee page. We also are increasing membership communication by updating our microsite and increasing our posts to social media. We are working with the AIPLEF to visit schools to increase interest in careers in IP Law.
