Course Description:

To be successful in today’s continually changing health care industry, students must be able to learn and apply an ever increasing breadth of knowledge. This curriculum introduces students to various healthcare careers and cultivates basic knowledge and skills common to many health occupations.

Goals/Objectives:

·  Develop skills and knowledge common to many health care professions, such as anatomy, medical terminology, infection control, diseases, safety, etc.

·  Explore the various health careers and be prepared to present project on career of choice

·  Develop leadership skills through participation in HOSA and classroom activities

·  Explore the history of healthcare

·  Recognize that the role of a health care professional requires the highest standards in work ethics and personal responsibility

·  Develop workplace readiness skills

Topics to be Covered may include, but are not limited to the following:

I.  Introduction to HOSA

a.  Election of officers

III.  Career Exploration

a.  Projects may be done on careers using various formats

b.  Module on Health Care Careers

c.  Research

IV.  Anatomy & Physiology, including diseases/health issues

a.  Module on Anatomy and Physiology

b.  Projects may be done using various formats

V.  First-aid and CPR

a.  American Heart Association Heartsaver course if time allows and resources are available

Instruction:

Group projects, research, and presentations may be required for this class. Material may be presented by lecture, handouts, overheads, Powerpoints, class discussions, computer software or internet, and various audiovisuals. Student competencies will include bulleted items on the student competency record. This record is available for all students to review in the classroom and on my website.

Evaluation:

Quizzes/Tests within the software will be automatically assessed by the computer:

Class participation /assignment/journal grades will count 10%.

Class participation/worksheets grades will count 30%

**These grade are very important and have a significant impact on your final average. So be an

active participant in your learning process!!

Tests/Projects/Quizzes/Modules will count 60%.

I reserve the right to make adjustments as necessary.

Classroom Rules:

Students are expected to abide by all regulations set forth in the School Handbook. Citizenship grades will be lowered if inappropriate classroom behavior occurs. Be RESPECTFUL. Respect me. Respect yourself. Respect your classmates. Respect any/all guests in our room. Raise your hand if you have a question. Be PREPARED. Bring your materials to class everyday. Be ON TIME. You should be in your seat by the end of the Tardy Bell. Be RESPONSIBLE. Get your assignments done on time. Arrangements for work missed due to absences must be made with me within 3 days upon return to school. This is YOUR responsibility. Please be aware that attendance is crucial due to the use of internet based HealthCenter21 in the class. I will be available after school one day a week for makeup work if you make prior arrangements with me. Be POSITIVE. Check negative attitudes at the door. You have an abundance of potential. Take ownership of your learning experience!

***Requested SUPPLIES: notebook (1 inch 3 ring binder works best), paper, pen, pencils, folder with pockets, project materials, ear buds. Whatever works best for you!
