Childrey Fete Produce Stall

Just a reminder to put aside a jar of marmalade for the summer fete as the oranges will soon be in season. You might like to try this recipe:

Marmalade

800g Seville oranges

1.4kg preserving sugar

Juice of 2 lemons

3 x 350ml jars

Put the fruit in a large saucepan, put in enough water so that they float freely. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 2 hours until the fruit is very soft. Add more water from the kettle if necessary if it's boiling away.Take the fruit out of the pan. Cut in half. Scoop out the pips and put in a small pan. Chop the oranges finely / coarsely depending on your preference and put into a large pan.Ladle some of the orange cooking water over the pips. Bring to the boil and let boil for 5 minutes. Strain over the chopped oranges, add the juice of 2 lemons and stir in the sugar. Bring to the boil gently so that the sugar dissolves before the jam starts to boil until setting point is reached - about 15 minutes.Ladle into prepared jars and seal.

Childrey 5k and 10k Fun Run, 2014

We will be holding the usual 10k Fun Run as part of the St. Mary's Church Fête next year and this time we will also be adding a 5k for those who either don't want to run as far or would prefer to spend longer sampling the afternoon teas and other attractions of the fete.

Details and route and still being finalised, and if you would like to get involved with the organisation or simply get your entry in really early please email .

The cost of medals and trophies continues to increase so if you are a local business that might be prepared to contribute towards the cost – in return for some excellent publicity – then please do let us know. With this much advance notice there really is no excuse for not making the Fun Run part of your New Year's resolutions for 2014.

Fond Farewells to Tom Marks

Childrey Parish Council

It was with great sadness that the Parish Council learnt of the death of Tom Marks. This is not only a great personal loss to hisfamily and friends but his death is a big loss to the village.Tom has been extremelyactive in various villageorganisations and charities and of course he and Satu opened their beautiful house and gardens to the village on many occasions throughout the years. He will be sadly missed and all our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Sue Worth

My first recollection of Tom was around 11.25pm one Christmas Eve around 20 years ago, when together with Satu and his house guests, all dressed for formal dining they arrived at St. Mary's for Midnight Eucharist. I soon learnt that he was the most hospitable of men, devoted to his family and St.Mary's, always interested in the progression of children as they grew and made their way in the world. As owners of Childrey's only vineyard the grape harvest was a time of great fun and superb food, with Tom masterminding the proceedingsin his own inimitable style, his eyes twinkling with some amusing thought and his soft Scottish chuckle. We were all fortunate to have known him.

The Reverend Leonora A. Hill

Tom, his jovial welcoming smile, his enormous generosity of spirit that spilled over into warm hospitalityand a real sense and expressionof community.

I first met Tom on the evening of my induction atChildrey Manor.Tom and Satu had literally openedup their homefor the evening; a stream of clergy, including theBishop, began arriving and traipsing up the stairs, taking over the bedroomsas theychanged into their robes ready for the service. After the service Tom and Satuinvited everyonein for refreshments; two hundred guests including my family and friends and a coach loadof parishioners from Charlton Kings. I think that says it all.

Result of Christmas Card Sales

This is to thank everyone who so generously supported the sales of Christmas cards this year. You will be pleased to know that I have been able to send a cheque for £750 to the Church towards the purchase of cushions for the hard old pews!

Together with the reclaiming of the Gift Aid, this should make just over £1000, and it is all thanks to you that this has been possible.

It is with much appreciation both for this year and all previous year that we proudly announce that around £12,000 has been given to good causes in the Village.

Local News: A338 Closure?

Rumours have circulatedthat Network Rail is planning to close the A338 road bridge (by the Volunteer Pub in Grove) for six months from the 10th of February 2014. This is part of Network Rail's electrification works programme.Grove Parish Council organised a public meeting on Tuesday 17th of Decemberwhere more than 200 members of the public came to listen and ask questions of Network Rail regarding the closure, and to hear from the County Council regarding the proposed diversion routes (through many of the surrounding villages), and also to hear from the bus company representatives.

The Clerk of Grove Parish Council, Graham Mundy, had the following points to report following this meeting:

  • Network Rail have not yet applied for permission to close the road
  • When the application is received, the County Council will give 2 to 3 months’ notice before work commences
  • 6 months closure of the road is worst case scenario
  • Any diversions will not be running through Denchworth, but more likely via the A417
  • The road closure is necessary because of bridge dismantling and rebuilding work. A Bailey type bridge was suggested to allow traffic through and it is believed that would be possible seeing that Network Rail owns the land by the old station
  • The County Council is not ruling out any solutions to the traffic problem and will keep local Councils up to date on development.

This summary has been written by the editor following a telephone conversation with Graham Mundy. Please check grove-oxon.org.uk for up to date information.

As always, if you have any questions or suggestions to the Parish Councilplease contact Debbie on 01235 751923 or email next Parish Council meeting is on Monday 13th January 7.30pm at the Village Hall, all welcome.
