Florence Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program Natural Resources Scholarship

Florence Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program is a group of dedicated volunteers working under the auspices of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The mission of Florence STEP is to enhance the fisheries in the Siuslaw River basin, restore habitat to improve conditions for salmon and steelhead and to promote education through activities both in the classroom and in the watershed.

The group’s signature effort is the Steelhead Brood stock program, which provides up to 100,000 hatchery-raised steelhead to the Siuslaw River and Lake Creek fisheries each year. At trap sites on Whittaker Creek and Lake Creek, the club collects steelhead eggs and milt. The fertilized eggs are raised at its small hatchery in Florence to an eyed stage, before being transferred to Willamette Hatchery in Oakridge.

STEP volunteers believe that good stewardship of our natural resources is important. Through habitat restoration, stream surveys, hatchery programs and education efforts, the volunteers are committed to preserving and enhancing the fisheries in the Siuslaw Watershed.

The club is enthusiastic in its offering of this scholarship for a student who is interested in pursuing a course of study in the fields of Natural Resources.
