Wells Cathedral deservedly has gained an enviable reputation for its lovingly maintained Gothic architecture, its world class music, and its Ministry of Welcome to some 250,000 visitors each year as well as around 150,000 people who come to the Cathedral for services, concerts, lectures etc.

Underpinning the Cathedral is a diverse organisation whose responsibilities cover music, works, virgers, library, archive, education, outreach, finance, HR, administration, volunteer management and trading companies. The Cathedral’s income comes from three main sources: entry donations and other voluntary income; property and investments; and its commercial activities, currently a shop and catering business.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POST:Supervisor/General Assistant
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Cathedral Cafe is a counter service Café and Restaurant with 96 covers
KEY PURPOSE OF POST:
Serve customers, supervise service and Café employees
LOCATION: Wells Cathedral, Wells
REPORTING TO:Assistant Manager
HOURS OF WORK:
Shifts as agreed with the Manager within the opening hours of the Restaurant (10.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Saturday, 11.00am to 5.00pm Sunday and Bank Holidays) plus functions
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Ensure all customers are made to feel welcome and are dealt with in a polite, efficient and effective manner.
  2. Carry out all tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the service area (i.e. the serving of food, drinks and clearing of tables) always maintaining the highest possible standards.
  3. Carry out general tasks as required ensuring the smooth operation of the company (i.e. clearing, ironing, dishwashing, replenishing of stocks).
  4. Undertake tasks associated with the handling of food and be aware of the risks involved.
  5. Operate the till when directed, ensuring that amounts entered and change given are correct at each transaction.
  6. Assist at functions at other venues when required.
  7. Ensure that relevant statutory requirements are met.
  8. Carry out such other duties as may be necessary for the proper execution of the post.
Café Supervisor Shift Additional Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure the smooth running of the day to day operation of the Cathedral Café maintaining the highest possible standards.
  2. Supervise the staff in accordance with the Handbook to efficiently run the service and café areas.
  3. Liaise with the Chef during key service periods.
  4. Supervise staff using the till and credit cards, putting up the float at the beginning of service, ensuring sufficient change is available at all times, cashing up at the end of the day and using the safe for all monies at the end of the day. Complete daily turnover record for the Accounts Office and Head of Catering.
  5. Assist in ordering goods from suppliers as requested by the Assistant Manager.
  6. Ensure that all statutory and cleaning requirements are met and recorded.
  7. Ensure that all comments and complaints and handover notes are completed for the Assistant Manager in the Handover Book.
  8. Carry out other such duties as may be necessary for the proper execution for the post and as directed by the Assistant or Deputy Manager and or Head of Catering.

Main Terms and Conditions

Hours of Work / 20 hours per week
Week 1 Wed 1000 – 1630, Fri 1000-1630, Sat 0930-1630 hours (Saturday as Supervisor)
Week 2 Wed 1000 – 1630, Fri 1000-1630, Sun 0930-1630 hours (Friday and Sunday as Supervisor)
Salary / £8.17 per hour
Pension / Defined Contribution Scheme. Contributions as % of salary:

Holiday / Five working weeks per calendar year plus bank holidays, each pro rata.
