About BWV
About the Women to Women Project / Bristol Women’s Voice (BWV) is a powerful voice for women making women’s equality in Bristol a reality.
We make sure that when key decisions are taken in Bristol, women’s voices have been listened to and their ideas and concerns acted upon.
We bring together women to share ideas, exchange experiences, support campaigns and events and celebrate success so that together we can make Bristol a showcase for women’s involvement, empowerment and equality.
The Bristol Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone is one of the largest development sites in the country. It is expected to deliver 22,000 jobs in a mix of business, leisure and housing developments. Bristol University is going to locate a new campus on the site.
The adjoining ward of Lawrence Hill is mostly in the most deprived 10% in England and Wales, the remainder is in the 10-20% most deprived. This has got worse since 2010. 19% of households get means tested benefits. 46% of children live in income deprived households. 60% population is BME including a large Somali population. 30% do not have English as their main language.
The challenges for women are poverty; language skills; lack of educational qualifications; lack of flexible, affordable childcare or employment that allows this. A previous study undertaken by students from UWE found a lack of awareness about what was happening on the site and a lack of connectivity and transport links to the site from adjoining wards including Lawrence Hill.
None of the current plans and proposals have a gender dimension including the need for part time employment, childcare or a focus on developing skills for employment and self-employment for women from Lawrence Hill.
This project will assist women from some of the poorest wards in the city to be linked to/aware of the opportunities for employment in the Temple Quay Enterprise Zone and women on low income from diverse ethnicities, ages and backgrounds will be connected to skills providers.
Potential employers, skills providers and planners will be made aware of what women from these areas need in order to access jobs there.
We will assess their understanding of what barriers women face in accessing employment and monitor to see if these are addressed in future actions.
