COLLEGE OF COASTAL GEORGIA

Faculty Meeting Minutes

October 12, 2012

The faculty of the College of Coastal Georgia met on Friday, October 12, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the Jones Building Lecture Hall. Dr. Phil Mason, Vice President for Academic Affairs, presided.

Approval of Minutes

Dr. Mason called the meeting to order and asked for approval of the minutes from the September 14, 2012 meeting. A motion from the faculty was made to accept the minutes as presented, seconded and the motion unanimously carried.

Dr. Valerie Hepburn, President

Dr. Hepburn announced she has advised the Chancellor and the Board of Regents of her intent to resign as President of the College of Coastal Georgia, effective May 31, 2013. She indicated the search process should begin in early November and Dr. Claire E. Hughes will be the College contact for nominations.

The Chancellor and the Board will launch a national search for a successor. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, community leaders and trustees will be represented on the Search Committee.

Her decision was based on personal and professional considerations. She wishes to spend more time on academic endeavors, public policy concerns and personal matters. She indicated that by next year many of the milestones of the campus transformation will be accomplished and the time for her to both to make a change while being able to ensure that the institution will continue forward without any disruption is excellent.

In an effort to safeguard our stability and growth, Dr. Hepburn agreed to serve until a permanent successor is appointed. During the search, she will continue to vigorously carry out her leadership role for this academic year, and will be actively involved in and supportive of the transition to new leadership next summer.

Thereafter, she plans to return to her roots where she will focus her energies on research, public service and teaching while assisting the University System on several health and education policy projects.

Dr. Hepburn reviewed various aspects of the successful transformation of the College and feels CCGA is poised to be one of the jewels in the University System, a destination institution anchored in service-learning, academic excellence, access and affordability, and community engagement.

In the coming months, she looks forward to our advancing another degree program, initiating the second phase of student housing, securing funding for a final building renovation, developing and hosting new campus events and traditions, and opening the first-class Correll Center for Teacher Education and Learning.

She concluded her announcement by saying it is an exciting time to be at the College of Coastal Georgia, and she looks forward to continuing our progress together.
