West Virginia Policy 5202 establishes the minimum requirements for the licensure of educational personnel to be employed in the public schools of West Virginia. The primary purpose of licensure is to assure the public that educators meet established levels of competence to deliver an appropriate and effective educational program to the state's public school students. Licensure requirements established in this policy provide a means of ensuring that persons employed in West Virginia public schools have the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the responsibilities of their professional assignments in instruction, student support services and/or administration. IMPORTANT: PLEASE CHECK WITH THE BOARD OF EDUCATION COUNTY OFFICE WHERE YOU WANT TO WORK REGARDING ONLINE/CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION AND OBSERVATION HOUR(S) REQUIREMENTS.CLASSROOM OBSERVATIONS: Students are required to successfully complete the requirements of the online portion of this course before classroom observations can be scheduled.Objectives of the course as a student in this course, you will be provided with a review of the laws and policies that govern teaching in West Virginia. You will learn the specific procedures to obtain your initial Substitute Teacher Permit according to West Virginia Policy 5202. You will be provided with information about teaching and classroom management, information on how to become a substitute teacher, general information about teaching and the opportunity to learn about the laws and policies that are relevant to teaching. Students will learn specific information about various teaching strategies, classroom management and resources to assist them as substitute teachers.Course structure and schedule students can register at any time throughout the year. Students must log a minimum of 14 clock hours online Must complete each section’s quiz with a minimum of 80% accuracy, and must complete the online course evaluation (required for certificate of completion). Complete 4 hours of classroom observations within the public school system AFTER completion of the online portion of the course. (Instructor will notify students when they can begin their observations. A printable observation form is provided in the online section of the course.) Observation forms must be submitted to the instructor when complete. Students will receive an electronic Certificate of Completion upon completion of all course requirements above. Topics to Be Studied; School Law and Policies, Expectations of Substitute Teachers, Classroom Management, Information about Teaching in Today's Classrooms, Teaching Strategies, Preventing Misbehavior and Dealing with Misbehavior, General Information about Students, Special Projects to be Included in the Course, and students are expected to put together a "Magic Bag/Bag of Tricks." Methods of Student Evaluation; participants will read each section of the online portion of the course and spend a minimum of 14 clock hours reading and reviewing the information provided in the course. Students must respond to four scenarios posted on the online discussion board and complete each section's quiz with a minimum of 80% accuracy. Verification of four hours of classroom visits must be provided to the instructor. Prerequisite(s) for the course include Four-year college degree, and a 2.0 GPA in undergraduate studies, an up-to-date Tine (tuberculosis) Test is also required.
