MEETING TOPIC: “Slavery in New Jersey”

Speaker Stephanie Stevens will present some surprises in her discussion of the history and role of slaves and free men in New Jersey and Hunterdon County. She is Chairman of the Hunterdon Cultural & Heritage Commission and County historian. Mrs. Stevens is a retired teacher, former mayor of Readington Township, founder of the Readington Township Museum and author of numerous books on local history.

Come share an afternoon with one of our more knowledgeable local historians.

Refreshments will be served at this meeting. Hospitality Chair Lyn Rahenkamp will gladly accept donations of food for the afternoon. Her number is (908) 236-2892.

OPEN HOUSE

What a roaring success the 20th anniversary Open House was for all who attended. Attendees got to see many historical documents and records as well as enjoyed good food and conversation. We would like to encourage you to donate any documents, records, artifacts relating to Tewksbury history if you are looking for a permanent home for them. We are also interested in displaying personal collections at Society Headquarters. If you interested please give us a call at 832-6734.

6th ANNUAL ANTIQUE SHOW & SALE

The 6th annual Antique Show and Sale will be on December 5 and 6, 2009 at the Old Turnpike School. Watch for more information in future newsletters.

All from 9 am to Noon. If you can lend a couple of hours on any of the above dates we need you. Please call ahead to Headquarters to let us know if you can help.

20TH ANNUAL ART SHOW

The Art Show Committee Chaired by Alice Walters and Kathy Halsey is in process of launching this year’s 20th Anniversary show. The first committee meeting will be held at HQ Wednesday, April 8 at 4pm. We are planning exciting changes for this year’s show which begins with receiving on October 2nd and concludes on October 10th. We welcome any volunteers wishing to participate. BARN TOUR

The planning for the July Barn Tour has begun. Loren Spiotta-DiMare is heading up the Barn Tour Committee for the Society and has held several planning meetings already. Several barn owners have been approached about having their barn on the tour and some have heartily accepted and are looking forward to hosting the tours. We are our joint sponsors with the Tewksbury Trail Association. The tour date will be Sunday July 19 from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine.

SPIRIT OF THE JERSEYS – STATE HISTORY FAIR

For those of you interested in New Jersey History, there is a History Fair on Saturday May 2 11 am to 5 pm at Washington Crossing State Park, Titusville, NJ. Many historical societies from across NJ as well as re-enactors will be present. Over 150 organizations participated the previous time the fair was held.

FLEA MARKET

The 15th annual Tewksbury Flea Market will be Sat., September 5th from 8 am to 2 pm and will again be held in the same location as last year – the farm field on Route 517. One change the Board has decided is that the rain date will be SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 6th. All past vendors will be mailed a registration form in June. Please save high quality items for donation to the Society’s table; pick-up will be arranged starting mid-summer.

We need volunteers and many of you have checked the box on your membership form however we need a few more people. If you would like to volunteer to help on the day of the flea market call Flea Market Committee Chairman David Kemp at (908) 439-2152.
