Greening Schools on

Arbor Day Program

We are pleased to announce that Charlie Proutt and Eileen Schilling, owners of Horsford’s Nursery in Charlotte, will be offering one large shade or ornamental tree to ten schools in Addison and Chittenden counties for their 2015 Arbor Day Ceremonies. If your school is interested in participating in the Greening Schools on Arbor Day Program, please complete the application on the following page and submit it to Alexandra Pastor by April 15, 2015. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to enhance your school’s grounds and educate your students about the benefits of trees.

Participating Schools must agree to:

¨  Plant the tree on Arbor Day (Friday, May 1st) as part of a school-wide Arbor Day Ceremony.

¨  Pick-up the tree at Horsford’s Nursery in Charlotte. They will show you how to safely unload the tree. If delivery is necessary, a $60 fee will apply.

¨  Maintain the tree into the future.

Horsford’s Nursery will provide:

¨  One balled-and-burlapped or containerized 2 – 2 ½ inch tree suitable for the site.

Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation can provide:

¨  Consultation to ensure the right tree is planted in the right place, and the right way.

¨  Celebration Ideas: For lots of ideas about how to observe and celebrate Arbor Day in your school, we will share “Celebrate Arbor Day!” created by the Arbor Day Foundation.

¨  Arbor Day Workbooks for Kindergarten through 8th grade: Celebrate Vermont’s Arbor Day by having students complete workbook projects that help teach the importance of trees. There are 23 different projects that can be adjusted to accommodate varying degrees of difficulty.

¨  Tree Trading Cards: Combine the Workbook Projects with the Trading Cards that were designed and developed through last year’s ‘Growing Works of Art’ contest. You can give them out as a prize after they complete a certain number of projects, or give them out individually as they complete projects and encourage collecting the whole set.

The Celebration Ideas guide, Arbor Day Workbook and requesting Tree Trading cards can be found at www.vtcommunityforestry.org/celebrate/arbor-day. You will also discover other resources to support your school’s learning and celebrations around Arbor Day at this site.
