The parade will consist of nine (9)judged categories:

DIVISION 1-JUDGED:

Each of the 5categorieswithin division 1will receive 1st – 3rd placerosettes, a trophy and a check for their placing.

Category:

1) Classic or Antique car clubs

2) Antique vehicles,

3) Cheerleading or Drill teams

4) Horse riding group/or horse drawn wagon or carriage

5) Unique (strolling acts, mini cars, trick ropers etc.)

CATEGORY1 AWARDS:

Awarded by the NW Montana Fair Commission. A check will be mailed to the address on the entry form.

First - Trophy, Rosette and $75.00

Second - Rosette and $50.00

Third - Rosette and $25.00

Fourth - Rosette

JUDGING CRITERIA DIVISION 1:

DIVISION 1:

VEHICLE CATEGORIES:

  1. Classic/Antique Car Cubs (25 years of age). Clubs only (8 cars /per club maximum).
  2. Antique vehicles (Model Year 1941 or older) –Individual.

JUDGING CRITERIA FOR ALL VEHICLES:

a. Classic Antique Vehicles will be pre judged at lineup area by highly qualified judges.

b. Car club entries with less than 4 vehicles will not be judged but may still enter the Parade.

CHEERLEADER and DRILL TEAM GROUPS:

JUDGING CRITERIA:

  • Performance(partially prejudged at lineup area) 1-60 points: (Jumps-15 pt., motion-15pt., spirit-15pt., performance-15pt.)
  • Decorated vehicle 1-10 points
  • Crowd appeal and marching routine 1-30 points
  • Possible total points 100 points

HORSE RIDING GROUPS/OR HORSE DRAWN WAGON/CARRIAGE:

JUDGING CRITERIA:

a. All riders should be dressed in the same uniform. 1-20points

b. Horses must be under control and have matching tack. 1-20points

c. Performance (do they horse do any kind of drill or line up?) 1-20points

d. Crowd appeal 1-40 points

UNIQUE:

An entry that does not fit into any other category. Divided into commercial and non-commercial entries.

JUDGING CRITERIA DIVISION 2:

DIVISION 2:

FLOAT CATEGORIES:

  1. Best Youth float: for nonprofit service organizations representing youth (4-H, Boy Scouts, FFA, or any other youth group.)
  2. Outstanding non-commercial float: representing non-commercial organizations.
  3. Outstanding commercial float: representing commercial organizations.
  4. Most applicable to the Fair theme: “Stirrup some Fun”.

RULES:

a. Floats may not exceed 65 feet in length including the tow vehicle.

b. Towing vehicles must be decorated. Points will be deducted for undecorated towing vehicles.

c. All floats shall have a skirt to cover the wheels within the bounds of safety.

d. City Code requires no superstructure or part of the Float may exceed 13.6 feet from street level.All float components mustbe wired or otherwise secured. It must be able to go under street lights.

JUDGING CRITERIA FOR ALL FLOATS:

  1. Theme 1-20 points. Themes vary, but once established, the float needs to tie together with the theme. Judges will look at each float to make sure the overall design and individual elements comply with the chosen theme. For example, a float in a “Country Fair” parade might feature cowboy boots, cowboy hats, and animals. If a float does not adhere to the theme, judges may deduct significant points or disqualify the entry altogether.
  2. Overall appearance 1-30 points. Some floats my appear sloppy and hastily designed while others are meticulously crafted and very well put together. In most cases, the difference between the two types of floats is a result of the float’s detail. A float should flow together and be balanced. As judges observe the float, they typically deduct points for overlooked details or small imperfections. Floats with obvious attention to detail is more likely to receive additional points from the judges.
  3. Originality & Creativity 1-15 points. Hand decorations score higher than store bought. Is there any unusual use of materials in the making of the float? (lights, mirrors,) Are there hand built components on the Float, (Bridges, Buildings) Originality of the decorations. Are there any special effects on the float (smoke or bubbles)? Is there animation? Judges typically give full points to floats with a higher difficulty of design and use in material.
  4. Music-(Canned: 1-10points, Live 10-20 points.) 1-20points. Music needs to keep with the theme. Sound should be clear and of good quality. Is it able to be heard clearly by spectators.
  5. Crowd appeal 1-15 points. Can it be seen clearly from a spectator’s viewing distance? Is the music engaging to the spectator’s? Judges will consider the overall appearance, design, movement, color, and harmony of the float in the parade
  6. Possible total points 100 points
  7. Note: 10 points deducted for undecorated tow vehicle.

CLOWNS: Overall best clown will receive a check for $50.00 (no trophy or rosette)

CATEGORIES NOT JUDGED: These categories are welcomed, enjoyed, but will not receive an award.

NW Montana Fair Parade Guidelines

The NW Montana Fair Parade is one of the focal points of the NW Montana Fair. It is meant to be enjoyed by old and young alike. The following rules will apply:

By order of the Kalispell Police Dept: Specific Guidelines will be enforced by them if need be.

  1. NO throwing of candy or any promotional objects or “free items” to the spectators. These items must be handed out on the sidelines
  2. NO alcoholic beverages may be consumed or exposed during the line-up and procession of the parade
  3. Line-up is on 8th Street West only! From 1st Avenue West going west, but heading east.

DO NOT LINE-UP OR HAVE PARTICIPANTS DROPPED OFF AT THE INTERSECTION OF 1ST AVE. WEST AND 8TH STREET WEST. TRAFFIC WILL NOT BE HALTED THERE UNTIL 15 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE START OF THE PARADE.

THERE WILL BE NO BLOCKING OF ALLEY-WAYS.

ALL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS LINE UP WEST OF 5TH AVE. WEST SO YOU ARE ABLE TO LEAVE ON 5TH AVE. WEST AS A MAIN ARTERY NORTH OR SOUTH.

PARTICIPANTS AT THE AVENUES MUST BE MOBILE (able to move).

BE MINDFUL OF THE STREET CONDITIONS.

GUIDELINES BY ORDER OF THE FAIR PARADE COMMITTEE

  1. Each entry should be decorated (wherever possible) with the theme of the parade.
  2. Controversial Political or Moral issues may be displayed upon approval of the Parade Committee only.
  3. A representative for each entry should check in at 7:30 A.M. at the Flathead High School parking area where the Kalispell Chamber float and/or Ambassadors will be stationed to direct entries.
  1. Judging will begin at 8:30 A.M. and continue through 9:30 A.M.
  2. Horse and dog entries are responsible for providing your own “Pooper Pickers” (people to pick up droppings). Those not

providing ‘pickers’ will be charged $20 per animal payable to the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce. You can arrange to pay this fee at the time of entry if you will not be able to provide your own ‘picker’.
