Buffalo Bill in Lancaster: A Cowboy Celebrity Helps Rewrite a Local Story

Seminar Description: Lancastrians loved William F. Cody—aka Buffalo Bill. They packed the Fulton for his premiere in 1873 and flocked to outdoor arenas when his “Wild West Shows” later came to town. Yet 110 years before Cody’s Lancaster debut, the Paxton gang had broken into the Lancaster jail (later the foundation of the Fulton Theatre) and murdered the last of the Conestoga Indians. And so when Cody took the Fulton stage in a show about killing Indians on the Western frontier, he was indirectly paying homage to the very spot where the long process of “Indian removal” had begun. Authors Leslie Stainton and Jack Brubaker explore this uncanny connection and tell the real-life story behind the man whose exploits inspired the musical Annie Get Your Gun, onstage at the Fulton from January 24 through February 19, 2017. Cody’s popularity, in Lancaster and across the United States, says much about the way Americans grappled with the turbulent history of relations between native and non-native Americans in the 19th century.

Seminar Description: On a cold February morning, do you need to some interesting reminders about why winter is such a great season? Do you pause to study the changes to the ecosystem and wildlife habitats in the winter? Here is your chance to explore our local winter environment. Lisa Sanchez, park naturalist and SEE presenter, has a great day planned, highlighting many things that can only be experienced in the winter! At this “sweet”SEE seminar, you will experience the history, collecting, boiling, finishing, and candy-making stages of maple sugaring. There will even be time for tasting a pancake or two with REAL maple syrup with lunch! You will also explore how animals survive the winter. This seminar will explore wildlife migration, hibernation, and winter activity habits. A hike through the woods will offer an opportunity to find signs (like tracks and scat) that the animals that are active throughout the cold days of winter.

Seminar Description: For thousands of years, we have kept stories alive, because stories have returned the favor and kept us alive. They hold treasures of knowledge about you, your friends and yes, your enemies. This seminar will break down the structure of novels and films to give you a new look at your life’s journey. You are always the protagonist in your own story, but you also play roles in the lives of others as friend, mentor, comic relief and even antagonist. Each role demands that you act, take bold risks and meet the world in a conversation of mutual reshaping. Through readings, film samples, Hollywood loglines, writing exercises and role play (totally voluntary!), you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the elements of story and how to use those elements to communicate, advocate and live fully in the universality of your own story.

Seminar Description: In this session, we’ll learn about the history of radio theatre, and the elements of a radio drama. We’ll create short, original radio plays, advertisements, and public service announcements developed from personal stories. There is a lot of group work in this session, a little improv, and plenty of opportunity to get your creative writing, movement, and flair for drama flowing. Radio broadcasts will be available on a podcast for extended listenership after the session.

Seminar Description: At this seminar, students will study architecture, history and design on the site of a historical 18th century Georgian style home, Rock Ford Plantation. Guided by architects from Marotta/Main Architects and a docent from Rock Ford, students will tour the interior and exterior of the historic home and barn. Students will learn how architects see structure and ornamental details of period buildings and objects through the perspective of line, texture, rhythm and scale. Students will apply this knowledge as they sketch, photograph and work with different media to create products in response to what they’ve learned.
