Short Story Project

For your final project in this unit, you may choose to complete one of the three tasks below. You may work in groups of two or by yourself for this project.

Task 1 - Picture perfect
If you choose this task, you will first select a picture that will be used as inspiration for the creation of your personal short story. Once the photo has been selected, you must brainstorm ideas for your story under the following headings:
-Setting
-Antagonist
-Protagonist
-Point of View
-Motivating Incident
-Climax
-Conclusion
You must then draft and edit your story, culminating this assignment with a good copy. You will hand in the inspirational photo, brainstorming and good copy.
Task 2 – Short Story Analysis
In choosing task #2, you will read the short story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury. You and your group will then analyze the following elements of the story and place the information on a poster board.
-In a paragraph, provide a summary of the story
-Setting/Tone
-Characterization: description of each member of the Hadley family in addition to choosing one visual symbol to represent each. Be sure to explain your reasoning.
-Theme, with examples to support
-Specific examples of foreshadowing (at least 4)
-Define 5 challenging words from the story
-Find 3 literary device in the story
Task 3 – Short Story Critique
In choosing task #3, you will go back to one of the short stories studied this unit.
-In the top left-hand corner: indicate country of origin, title of story, author’s name, genre of story (i.e. horror, suspense, comedy).
-In the top right-hand corner: an alternate title for your story.
-In the centre: create an illustration, sketch or collage that captures the story’s theme or main message
-In the bottom left-hand corner: give a letter grade rating for the story.
-In the bottom right-hand corner: write a one paragraph comment on the story. This is your chance to critically review the story, get at the good and the bad.
-On the back: write some commercial sales blurbs about the story’s appeal.
