Objectives:

1. Understand the ways in which the environment affected the development of the economies, politics, and culture of various parts of the Americas.

2. Describe essential features of the classical-era and postclassical civilizations of Mesoamerica

3. Describe the locations and characteristics of the Anasazi, Hopewll, Ohio River Valley, Plains, Western and the Mississippian cultures.

4. Compare the development of Mesoamerican and Andean civilizations, particularly the Aztec and Inca empires.

Essential Questions:

1. How did the different environments of Mesoamerica and the Andean region affect the development of civilizations?

2. Why did urban civilizations develop in Mesoamerica and the Andean region, but not in North America?

3. As you read this chapter, which things seemed to confirm your previous ideas about Native American peoples and civilizations? Were there any respects in which the authors challenged or contradicted your previous views?

4. How does technological development differ among the American peoples and societies previously discussed? What factors might explain the differences?

5. How does writing affect civilizations that develop it?

Procedures:

1. Read chapter 11 and fill out daily sheet.

2. Research the civilizations of the Americas

Group Project:

1. Students will be in groups of 4.

2. Students will choose one of the topics from the tic-tac-toe grid.

3. Students will then choose a form of presentation from the other grid.

4. Students will split up tasks evenly between group members.

5. Students will present project to the class on the 4th day.
