J O B A N N O U N C E M E N T: Executive Director
We are seeking a dynamic, progressive leader who has a passion for social justice and a commitment to building a new generation of leaders. The successful candidate should see this work as a calling rather than a job. 21 PROGRESS is a 501c3 organization founded in 2012 and seeded with start up funds from UFCW 21, the largest private sector union in Washington. 21 PROGRESS works to increase the number and expertise of new progressive leaders through leadership development programs in civic engagement, economic justice, arts & culture, and everyday economics. These programs serve DREAMers, New Americans and other low wage workers, their families and communities. 21 PROGRESS operates with a small core staff of four, a $400,000 annual operating budget and diverse programming partners throughout the community. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT: Lead the organization’s strategy and implementation, including oversight of programming, staff and operations.
2. PROGRAM: Develop new programs needed to create more progressive young leaders across Washington, often seizing opportunities to complement and partner with progressive community ally organizations. Current flagship program is supporting DREAMers and building new generation leaders.
3. DEVELOPMENT: Raise organization’s annual budget through grants, special events and donor cultivation. As a new organization, the Executive Director must be the passionate communicator of the mission and programs, and the builder of new relationships with individual and institutional donors.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED:
1. Commitment to social justice and realistic understanding of building a movement for equity and justice, especially with regard to coalition-building, organizing, and the role of organized labor and social justice organizations, particularly in communities of color.
2. Living/working knowledge of diverse communities and how race, class and income inequity affects these communities’ ability to fully participate in our society.
3. Fund development experience in donor relations, successful grant writing, planned giving, special events and/or other aspects of fundraising.
4. 2-4 years experience as nonprofit director or part of management team; demonstrated ability to design and implement successful programs a must. Nonprofit board experience a plus.
5. Visionary and self starter, comfortable working with youth, diverse grassroots community leaders – especially in communities of color and government officials.
6. Ability to function well in an open office with creativity, flexibility and multitasking; team leader/mentor; experience working in collegial non-hierarchical manner while maintaining leadership and accountability desirable.
7. Experience with training and mentoring youth/young adults and popular education development experience a plus.
8. Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
9. College degree or equivalent work experience required.
10. Bilingual in a language frequently spoken in Washington desirable.
COMPENSATION: $60,000-80,000 range DOE, plus generous benefits.
