Safety: The Instructor's Role
Acquired Building
Structure acquired by the authority having jurisdiction from a property owner for the purpose of conducting live fire training evolutions.
Application
Lesson plan component at which point the instructor provides opportunities for participants to practice or apply cognitive information to skills learned in a lesson. Also see Lesson Plan.
Backfire
Fire set along the inner edge of a control line to consume the fuel in the path of a wildland fire.
Below Grade Operation
Rescue activity that occurs at the bottom or slope of an open pit or trench, for example, freeing an equipment operator from an overturned backhoe that lies on the slope of an excavation; also, per OSHA 1926.650, any open operation such as that in an open trench for footings and foundations.
Block
Division of an occupation consisting of a group of related tasks that have some factor in common. Also see Unit.
Computer Assisted Instruction
Self-paced method of instruction in which individuals use a computer to respond to information and prompts presented on a screen.
Evolution
Set or prescribed action that results in an effective fireground activity. Also called Practical Training Evolution.
Fire Shelter
Aluminized tent carried by firefighters offering personal protection by means of reflecting radiant heat and providing a volume of breathable air in a fire-entrapment situation.
High Hazard Training
Training that involves activities that include certain known risks and potential unknown risks. Examples include evolutions or exercises in live fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, above- and below-grade rescue, and the use of power tools.
Logistics
Rational calculation and reasoning used to manage the scheduling of limited materials and equipment to meet the multiple demands of training programs and instructors.
Manipulative Training
Lesson or exercise in a training program in which participants handle or learn to handle equipment or materials in a coordinated or skillful manner.
Role Playing
Discussion in which a group acts out various scenarios. Also see Discussion.
