Next Meeting

Wednesday April 3, 2002

7:00 P.M. at

Granite City Food & Brewery

Please bring any India Pale Ale you have to this meeting for the May club-only competition.

Meeting Minutes

Thanks to Granite Food & Brewery for hosting our March meeting.

Darin Dorholt brought in an example of a screen-printed T-shirt with our logo that he had done up at T-Shirts Plus. They are running a special of 20 Shirts for $200. We voted to go ahead have 20 made. We had some made with logo the front and the back in XL and any requested sizes by members at the meeting.

Tim Fruestenberg had information on embroidery for shirts. It is a $30 onetime setup charge for converting the logo into the stitch pattern. It would be eight dollars per item and we would have to supply the clothing item. Tim was going to have some shirts done up for sale at the competition.

We held club officer elections at the March meeting and here are the results.

It was suggested that next year before the elections we discuss term limits and elect starting at the President Office and work down.

Al at Granite City said we could judge at Granite City on Saturday morning for the first round of judging as we did last. We decided not to because they open at eleven and we did not want to be in their way for their lunch service.

Larry Bell from Kalamazoo Brewing Company will emcee the Best of Show and will give a talk on the craft brewing industry. He will also be donating items for the competition. We will pay for his hotel room. It will be $140 for two nights.

BIG BREW 2002

Submitted by Bruce LeBlanc

It’s that time of year again for Big Brew 2002. Once again Big Brew 2002 will be held at my house, 1190 Flame wood Dr. Sauk Rapids on May 4th. So bring your brew kettles and some extract for an afternoon of leisurely brewing and libations. There are some extra burners and kettles at my house. If you are coming and need something, please talk with me at the next meeting so we can reserve it for you.

If you are planning on coming, just head out of town on highway 23 east about four miles, take the first left past the "hitchin post" on 40th and then a right on the service road and the next left into the neighborhood and look for 1190 on the mailbox or just smell for the brew kettles. If you want to bring a snack for the brewers feel free.

The AHA has some suggestions on beer styles but you can brew any style of beer if one of these is not what you want.

Irish Prefer Pub to Church, Survey Says

From Yahoo News & Reuters

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Going to the pub is a more important part of life in Ireland than attending church, the authors of a survey on social attitudes said Tuesday.

Only 22 percent of people in the Irish Republic view regular church going as important, compared with 35 percent who said going to the pub at least once a week was a priority, the survey by Mintel Ireland said.

It also indicated that those with the most money to spend were more likely to hand it over for a pint of beer than put it in a church collection plate.

"As you become wealthier, your likelihood of being a regular church-goer decreases," said Mark O'Connell, managing director of Mintel Ireland.

"It seems the higher up the ladder you go, the more difficult it gets to pass through the eye of the needle."

People questioned in British-ruled Northern Ireland were more abstemious, with only 20 percent listing pubs as a priority -- although the number of regular churchgoers was not much higher at 23 percent.

The authors of the survey, "Irish Lifestyles: The Rise of the Immoral Majority," said it showed the rapid advance of consumerism in both the Republic -- which witnessed an unprecedented economic boom in the latter half of the 1990s -- and Northern Ireland.

"Owning a flash car and a mobile phone, being a member of a private health club and having a home computer are the new symbols of Irish success on both sides of the border," the report said.

Older people living in rural areas were more likely to attend church than young city dwellers.

"Traditional values of a successful marriage, children, financial security and regular attendance at Sunday worship have all taken a back seat in many households."

The report was based on recent interviews with more than 2,000 people in the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland.

Home-Brewing Phase Comes To Long-Overdue

Conclusion

From theonion.com

Submitted by Charles Rice

BETHEL PARK, PA- Local resident Randy Paltz's two-year home-brewing phase finally came to its long-overdue conclusion Tuesday. "Thank God, it's over at last," said Andrea Longo, girlfriend of the 33-year-old beer aficionado. "Every few weeks, he'd make a big production about his latest 'Paltz's Signature Brew.' It all tasted the same-like really thick, shitty beer." Friend Tim Traschel also expressed relief, saying, "Now I can actually go to his house and bring some Michelob without getting a lecture about the low quality of hops in commercial beers."
