Course Description:

This course is an introduction to the French language. Emphasis is placed upon interpretive skills and communication through interpersonal and presentational means. French 1 is a course devoted to oral and written proficiency.Students are required to willingly participate in ALL activities.A three-ring binder/notebook complete with notebook paper and pocket(s) for handouts is required as well as a composition notebook to be kept in the classroom.

Prerequisites:Map Reading Score of 220.

Course Outline:

Unité 1: Beginning French Introduction

Students will:

Understand cultural differences,

Pronunciation differences,

Greet each other,

Give times and dates and some personal information.

Write an introduction of oneself.

Write one’s age and birthday.

Write where one is from.

Write one’s phone number.

Write the date & time.

Unité 2Who am I?

Students will:

Answer questions about physical characteristics, personality and simple likes and dislikes.

Ask questions to find out basic information about someone else..

Write about oneself including one’s personality & physical characteristics.

Write about someone else including age, personality & physical characteristics.

Unité 3 What do you like to do?

Students will:

Answer questions about likes and dislikes.

Ask and answer questions about activities including when, why and with whom.

React to someone else’s likes and dislikes.

Describe one’s activities in e-mails, texts and/or conversations.

Express likes/dislikes about activities.

Express why one likes or dislikes activities.

Write about when and with whom one likes or doesn’t like to do something.

Unité 4My school life.

Students will:

Speak with another person about one’s school day.

Say what classes and teachers one has and when one has them.

Say what materials one has and needs for each class.

Describe one’s class as difficult or easy.

Write information about one’s class schedule.

Write a description of one’s classes and teachers.

Unité 5 Let me introduce myself.

Students will:

Ask and tell what one’s family members look like and their personality.

Ask and tell what members of one’s family like to do and why.

Describe one’s family using photographs, etc.

Write about what members of one’s family like and don’t like and

what they do in their free time.

Unité 6 Hanging out!

Students will:

Ask and give details about what one does and where one goes after school or on the weekend.

Invite someone to do something or go somewhere.

Give & find out information about when and where to go.

Accept or reject an invitation to do something or go somewhere.

Write about what one will do after school or on the weekend.

Give details about one’s plans such as when, where, who and what.

Unité 7 Let’s go out to eat!

Students will:

Order food and drink in a restaurant.

Ask for the bill in a restaurant.

Ask for and understand basic information about the menu.

Ask for what one needs in a restaurant.

Write a description of a restaurant and its menu.

Give one’s preferences and recommendations of what to order in a restaurant.

Unité 8 I need some new clothes!

Students will:

Communicate with a salesperson while shopping.

Ask for and give information about sales, sizes, quantities, colors and prices.

Ask for and give simple opinions and compliments about things on might buy.

Write a friend about a sale in a store.

Write about what clothes to wear during different seasons and/or for

different activities.

Write a thank you note.

Methods of Evaluation :

Students will be evaluated using both oral and written formative and summative assessments along with objective and subjective quizzes/tests. Summative assessments correlate to the course outline. Evaluation rubrics will follow the Novice course objectives.

Students will also be evaluated using points assigned to each activity. A notebook grade

will be given each grading period with the exception of the last quarter.

Materials Required:

  • a three-ring binder/notebook
  • a French/English Dictionary (optional)
  • A pencil and pen EACH DAY!
