TOP TEN WAYS NOT TO GET A SCHOLARSHIP

  1. Apply Late. Most colleges have a priority funding deadline (usually in late fall). Remember that no matter how wonderful you may be, when the money’s gone, it’s gone.
  2. Wait until the last minute to take the SAT/ACT. Most college deadlines for updating test scores will be the December testing dates.
  3. Fall victim to the “Senior Slump”. Scholarship committees are not at all impressed with a student whose grades slide in the senior year.
  4. Don’t prepare for an interview with the Admissions. College admission officers interview many applicants each year and after a time they all begin to sound alike. Make yourself stand out. The interviewer wants to get to know you. Speak for yourself. Don’t let a parent do all the talking.
  5. Write a ho-hum essay. Again, admission officers and scholarship committee members see many, many applications. Be creative within the general guidelines given you.
  6. Take non-challenging classes to improve your GPA.You will be requiredto submit a copy of your high school transcript to the college. This credential will indicate the strength of your curriculum and which classes are advanced, honors, AP or IB. And yes, a grade of “A” in an honors or AP class means more than an “A” in a regular class.
  7. Don’t plan ahead. A scholarship is money that comes from a college’s own pocket and scholarship committee members may make awards in a manner they choose. All colleges are a little different in determining what requirements are necessary for a scholarship. Do your homework in researching the colleges you are interested in and what they are looking for.
  8. Don’t participate in extracurricular activities. Top scholarship recipients are generally pretty well-rounded. Colleges like to see combination of academic and outside activities. But remember, being involved in every activity known to man will not ensure a scholarship. And do not overlook the intrinsic value of such involvement, whether or not it may lead to scholarship eligibility.
  9. Don’t start building relationships with your teachers and counselors who will be writing recommendations for you.. Get to know teachers at your high school and seek out those who will go to a little extra trouble to write personal recommendations for you. A form letter type recommendation is really obvious.
  10. Assume you cannot afford a particular college. Apply, get admitted, find out about scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and then decide with your family if you can afford the school in question. You just never know.
