7th Grade Accelerated Honors Math Syllabus
Course Description:
This year, we will continue to implement The Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) Common Core Mathematics Standards. The 7th Grade Accelerated Math Course follows the GADOE Accelerated Mathematics 7B/8 Curriculum Map and Frameworks which covers the second semester of the 7th Grade Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) and all of the 8th Grade CCGPS. Parents may access these documents and information at . Students who are successful in the 7th Grade Accelerated Math course will then take Coordinate Algebra in the 8th grade. This is a high school level course for which they may earn one high school credit during their 8th grade year.
This year our county has adopted the New York Schools Common Core Mathematics Curriculum. While there is not a textbook for this curriculum, students will be provided with packets of worksheets for each unit. These packets will contain guided instruction, problem sets, and exit tickets. Students will need binders sufficient for keeping up with these materials and will need to bring them to class each day as this will serve in place of a textbook. Parent resources for the New York Schools Common Core Mathematics Curriculum are available at
Since this is an accelerated course it will be challenging and move at a more rapid pace than the regular seventh grade math course. Students should be prepared to put forth the extra time and effort to meet the objectives for this course. As an honor’s level course, there will be no extra credit assignments andno dropped test grades. When a student doesn’t master a standard as exhibited on a test, a re-test may be available. If so, the two test scores will be averaged for a final test grade resulting no higher than 80.
Per the Floyd County Gifted Schools Make-Up Policy, if a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to get the absentee work from each teacher. If the absence is excused, the student has three school days from the date of his/herreturn to complete and turn in the work. Any tests missed will be rescheduled with the teacher.
This year I will be using various technology to help keep parents and students aware of classroom assignments and activities. I now have a webpage. You may access it by going to , choosing Coosa Middle School from the drop-down menu in the upper left, choosing Honors, and then finding my name in the list. You may also acccess it by using the following address and then bookmarking the site on your computer, phone or tablet:
In addition to to the website, I will be using text messages for those students and parents who wish to receive reminders from me on their phone. Attached to this syllabus are directions regarding how to enroll in the text message service.
I look forward to a great year of challenging and enriching mathematics study! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns by email at or call 706-236-1856. My planning time is from 8:05-9:45 each day.
Please see the curriculum map and grading policy on the reverse side of this page.
Thank you for the opportunity to teach your students!
