InAugust2010,theCityofGreaterGeelong’sEconomicDevelopmentUnitcommencedthe processofundertakingasurveyofregional skill shortages.
Thesurvey aimstoassistwithabetterunderstandingoftherange andextentofskillshortages thatexistthroughout the GeelongRegion. Informationcollectedin thesurveywillbeusedina number ofways.
•TofacilitatetheGeelongRegionSkilledMigrationProject,aStateGovernmentfunded programthataimstoassistemployersfillskilledvacanciesthattheyareunabletofill through local labour markets.
•Toinformregionalworkforce, educationandtraining organisationsplanningfor the future.
•To assist in developing a strategic direction for growing Geelong’s future industry sectors.
Aquestionnairewasdeveloped(attached)anddistributedby mailandelectronically toregional businessesacrosstheRegion(CityofGreater Geelong,SurfCoastShire,GoldenPlainsShire andBoroughof Queenscliffe). Approximately,1700 questionnairesweredistributeddirectly by theCity andmany moreweredistributedthroughlocalnetworks. Informationonthe methodologyusedtocompile thisreportis locatedat thebackofthedocument.
Thepositionshavebeencodedagainst theAustralianBureauofStatistics,AustralianStandard ofIndustrial Classification (ANZSIC),2006andtheAustralianandNewZealandStandard Classificationof Occupations (ANZSCO),2006.

•51%ofexistingskill shortageswerereportedinthehealthcareandsocialassistancesector.
Occupations reported most frequently includegeneral practitioners, registerednursesgeneral andspecialist, andregisterednursesagedcare.
•24%ofexistingskill shortageswerereportedinthe manufacturingsector.
Occupationsmostfrequentlyreported includeengineering tradespersonssuchas welders/boilermakers, sheet metal workers, cabinet makersandmotor mechanics.
•11%ofexistingskill shortageswerereportedintheconstructionsector.
