KAPLAN HIGH SCHOOL ALMA MATER
Mid ringing bells and singing children,
Smiles and loads of cheer.
There stands our own dear Alma Mater,
Now and through the years.
Her building tall, and grounds so neat,
Stand under bright blue skies.
As years go by our thoughts return to
Dear Old Kaplan High.
All praise to thee, our Alma Mater,
Whom we love so dear;
Fond memories of you will live on through the years.
Fond memories that we hold dear
And those that make us blue.
Our praise to thee, Our Alma Mater,
Dear Old Kaplan High.

PARISH PHILOSOPHY
We, the members of the school family of Vermilion Parish, firmly believe that the worth of the individual is primary in all that we do to foster student learning. Since learning is a lifelong and continuous process, we are all students; therefore, a student may be defined as anyone who attends to learning, regardless of any limitations. Student learning depends upon a partnership of parents, children, and school which creates a Learning Triangle. The responsibility for the success of the Learning Triangle rests upon the school district employees--along with the Board of Education, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Department of Education, and the State Legislature--who must provide an environment conducive to learning.
The dignity of the individual is basic to success in any endeavor. Once respect for self is established, continued education begins to inculcate the respect for one’s own individuality and that of other. Student self esteem should be at the core of all educational programs. Instruction will be subordinate to learning, as it is the learner and not the teaching process that will be given top priority in instructional decisions.
Curriculum design will emphasize inquiry and problem resolution, cooperation over competition, and fairness over bias. Decisions will be made at the classroom level whenever practical and efficient. Building administrators and all services and operations of the district will be dedicated to the improvement of education for all students.
The Board of Education, through its employees, will be accountable for providing an education that is child-centered, democratically-enhanced, involvement-based, and environments, including curricular and extracurricular activities. Curricular designs will include instructional goals and activities which will provide for a better understanding of our global culture and its economics and improved communication skills, as well as a challenge by which to measure moral values. Family, state, national, and religious mores and customs will be addressed.
PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Vermilion Parish School System is to work together to provide learning opportunities for all children which will enable them to function competently as effective, productive, responsible, and thinking citizens, who will make needed contributions for life-long excellence in a rapidly changing world.
KHS MISSION STATEMENT

the school.
3. Students are accepted as valued individuals with unique physical, social, and intellectual

learning.
ROLE OF THE STUDENT
The student should:
Attend all classes daily.

Be respectful to all individuals and property.
Be clean and neat.
Be responsible for his/her own work.
Abide by the rules and regulations of the school.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS AND BEHAVIOR
Within the framework of every classroom activity, a certain atmosphere for learning must prevail. It is the duty of teachers and administrators to maintain such an atmosphere through the use of rules and fair enforcement. The following list of expectations is the minimum standards expected at KaplanHigh School and will be supplemented by additional teacher expectations.
CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION
Students are expected to fulfill all assignments given by teachers, and it is their responsibility to ask questions of the teacher if an assignment is not understood. Homework assignments may be considered as part of the grade in addition to exams, class participation and special assignments.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR
Students are expected and will be reminded to show respect for consideration of the right, privileges, feelings and needs of themselves, and others. Kaplan High School is a PBIS School and supports behavior intervention and reinforcement.
Teachers will be courteous, respectful, attentive, and fair to all students. Students will be courteous, respectful, attentive, and fair to all teachers.
Rules for acceptable behavior within the individual classroom will be carefully defined for students by individual teacher. It must be understood, by students, that teachers are individuals and therefore may expect different things and accept different types of behavior from their students. It is the student’s responsibility to recognize such differences and comply with them.
WORK AND STUDY HABITS
Students are expected to come to class with paper, pencils, and other required supplies as requested by teacher.Respect for teachers and other students are expected and will be demonstrated through attention and participation. Students who fail to submit homework will be sent to Intervention. A FRESHMAN ACADEMY provides freshmen students with Transitions - a full credit of study skills and career readiness, a freshmen teacher advisor, E-Portal planning , and a Big Brother or sister mentor. The purpose of the Academy is to assist freshmen with the transition from middle school to high school. Parents will be contacted by teacher advisors if problems persist with discipline or academics.
CHEATING POLICY
Copying answers from another student or from any source not sanctioned by the teacher will constitute a cheating offense. Whenever a student is guilty of cheating, the teacher will collect the student’s paper, mark a zero for the work, and notify the parents and main office immediately to the action taken. Any subsequent offenses may result in suspension from school.
MAKE-UP WORK AND/OR EXAMS
The student is responsible for speaking with each teacher immediately upon returning to school regarding make-up work/test. If a student is absent only on the day of the tests, he/she will take the test the first day he/she returns. According to pupil progression, students have 3 days to submit an excuse. However, make-ups are based on the amount of instructional days missed. For example if a student were absent 2 days, that student has 2 days to make up all work. However, in order to receive credit for the make-up work, a student must present an excused absent slip within 3 days of the student’s absence. Students will be assigned Intervention if work or test has not been made up in the allotted time as indicated in Pupil Progression (pg. 50).

DISCIPLINE POLICY
Education is a parental responsibility, only part of which is delegated to the school. In order to help create an atmosphere which encourages learning according to the school philosophy, it is necessary that certain levels of conduct and discipline be maintained. To achieve this end, certain guidelines are to be followed to enable the teacher and the student to be more comfortable with one another.
Allowing individuals to live with the natural and/or reasonable consequences of their actions is the essence of our discipline system. Therefore, punishment will only be administered to facilitate personal growth.
In an effort to achieve these ends and to ensure consistency in administering school discipline, this school has implemented a step-by-step PBS discipline program. The program is based upon the premise that students are expected to know the policies and consequences for violating these policies. Pre-school orientation and student handbooks have been made available to students and parents to achieve this objective.
- Teachers, counselors, and administrators are requested to work with the students to assist them in selecting proper alternatives in their decision-making process and in making the necessary adjustments toward becoming self-disciplined.
- The school uses various discipline methods to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning.
FORMS OF DISCIPLINE:
- WORK ASSIGNMENT
For minor disciplinary problems, a work assignment may be given to a student. This work assignment will be supervised and may include such work as helping to clean campus or working in a cafeteria.
- NOON DETENTION
Students are assigned the first ten minutes of the lunch period. Noon detention is used for dress code and ID infractions.
- AFTER- SCHOOL DETENTION
Students are assigned to the center for violations of school, state, and/or local board policies including but not limited to tardies and minor behavior infractions.
- ADJUSTMENTCENTER (ISS)
A.C. may be used for behavioral infractions and as an in-school suspension. The student is counted present for the day. They may take test(s) and are expected to complete all work assigned in AC.
V.SUSPENSION
Students suspended from school must remain off campus during the term
of the suspension. No tests or class work due on days of suspension may
be made up. Parents will be notified in writing and/or by telephone when
disciplinary action has been taken.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE
Teachers utilize various techniques to solve minor problems- behaviors that do not require administrator involvement, do not violate the rights of others, and are not chronic in the classroom. If these fail, as a first step, an in-class warning is issued and documented on the Student Behavior Report provided by the office. On next the offense , the student will be assigned after- school detention, and on the third minor offense, the teacher is to call the parents and refer to office.
