Fellow Compatriots / COSSAR / DAR and CAR Members,
This year we are again hosting the Annual COSSAR Picnic at Fort Lupton, northeast of Denver, Colorado, for a unique opportunity to see how our revolutionary era ancestors and their descendants may have lived. We expect to have the best of the SAR membership in Colorado present their expert knowledge and impressions of the life and times of the American Revolution.
Fort Lupton is the renowned preservation and restoration project undertaken by the South Platte Valley Historical Society (SPVHS). All amenities are quite suitable for our picnic, and we hope you will enjoy what we have planned. We especially want children and grandchildren to feel welcomed, entertained, and educated with the scheduled and closely supervised events.
The Fort area is located immediately adjacent to a large campground with all the amenities for a weekend stay. Members are highly encouraged to take advantage of the adjacent SPVHS campgrounds, which range from 30 to 60 primitive tent spaces for $8 per night. You may plan to stay Friday or Saturday nights, or both! Those members who live a longer distance away will want to seriously consider the option to stay overnight. Bring a self-contained white gas or propane stove if you plan to cook, and plenty of water even though perfectly fine ‘spigot’ water is also available.
Here's the scoop:
- The SPVHS Park opens at 9am, so early birds are encouraged. The Donelson House will serve as a greeting point at 10am to meet the COSSAR President and enjoy a Lemonade and Ginger Snap Reception.
- For the more adventurous, there will be a Tomahawk Demonstration and Training at 11am down by the black power range.
- At NOON the COSSAR Color Guard will post the colors inside the Fort and a cannon salute will be fired.
- A buffet picnic lunch of Buffalo Burgers with all the trimmings will be served immediately afterward by members of the SPVHS.
- At 1 pm talented COSSAR members will discuss their Living History roles in full uniform as soldiers to provide vivid insight into the perspectives of both sides of the American Revolution.
- At 2pm everyone is invited down to the Black Powder Range and Revolutionary War British and Continental camp. Children and adults will get a chance wander through the camp and ask questions about camp life during the Revolution, and safely fire live muskets at targets. Adults will have an opportunity to fire a musket. For the younger and less experienced children and adults we will have muskets with just blank loads (lot a smoke and no kick) and the more adventurous will have the opportunity to pay $5 to fire 3 balls from a real reproduction black powder firearm at a paper target. A range master will conduct each volley and qualified black powder firearms owners will provide side-by-side instruction on their use. The target area is secure and cordoned off for safety and proper procedures are strictly enforced.
- At both 2pm and 3pm, COSSAR members may take a one-hour Tour of the Fort conducted by an expert SPVHS (and COSSAR!) member.
- At 3pm SPVHS volunteers will treat paying attendees to a High Tea at the Donelson House.
Proceeds from all these events will be put toward either the SPVHS or the COSSAR ROTC and Awards fund. So, whether or not you have done so before, please come join us this year. We would enjoy seeing you!
