Accelerated Reader (AR)
Students will be required to read a total of 4 AR books during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Quarters. The students must also test on the books read by a specific due date. These test scores will counted as test scores in the students overall grade for Language Arts. I will add these scores into each student’s grades for Language Arts after the due date has passed. I will take the class to the media center to check out books and to test on or the day before the due date for each book. This assignment has the following requirements:
ê Books must be identified as AR books (you will need to use the AR webpage to look this up on the computer).
ê For the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Quarter, AR books must be a minimum of 150 pages in length and on a BL (Book Level) of 5.0 or above. The BL simply represents the reading level of fifth grade and zero months.
ê Books may be fiction or nonfiction.
ê Reading is to be done every night for homework for Language Arts. Be sure to allow enough time to read and test on each book.
ê Students must have their AR book with them every day for class.
ê Students must read and test on all four books by the due date set for each one by 4:30 pm on that date.
Reading is a skill that must be practiced to improve. It is also a skill that will be used for the rest of your life, no matter what career path you may choose. Please make sure you are reading every night at an acceptable pace to allow plenty of time to complete all four books. Students may read and test on as many books as they would like. I will accept the highest test scores for AR books to average with their grades. This gives my students the opportunity to improve their grades if they don’t do well on a particular book test. They may test on another book as long as it is before the due date for that book. I encourage all my students to read their books and test as quickly as possible to allow extra time to read other books and test if they need to. The following is a list of due dates for each book. Please help to insure that your student completes these assignments on time:
Book #1-Feb. 3 & 4, 2011
Book #2-Feb. 24 & 25, 2011
Book #3-March 10 & 11, 2011
Book #4-March 24 & 25, 2011
The Media Center will allow students to check out books/test on books during lunch and after school until 4:30 pm. Books may be checked out from any library (just be sure it is an AR book with a 5.0 BL or above and 150 or more pages).
