TheTexasHigherEducationCoordinatingBoardhasproducedthisGlossaryofcommonlyusedTexashighereducationterms.Byitsnature,theGlossarywillbeanevolvingdocument.IfyouhavesuggestionsforclearwordingfortermsintheGlossaryorfortermswhosedefinitionyouwouldliketohaveincluded,theCoordinatingBoard.

AATAssociateofArtsinaTeachingdegree.Board-approvedcollegiatedegreeprogramsconsistingoflower-divisioncoursesintendedfortransfertobaccalaureateprogramsthatleadtoinitialTexasteachercertification.(CTCCBM009)

AcademicCourseGuideManual(ACGM)TheofficiallistofapprovalnumbersforgeneralacademictransfercoursesthatmaybeofferedforstatefundingbypubliccommunityandtechnicalcollegesinTexas.ItlistsabasiccoreofgeneralacademiccourseswhicharefreelytransferableamongallpublicinstitutionsofhighereducationinTexasinaccordancewiththeTexasEducationCode,§61.051(g).TCCNSnumbersareassignedtomostcoursesinthemanual.AcademiccoursesreportedontheCTCCBM004mustappeareitheronthislistofapprovedcoursesorintheSpecialApproval/UniqueNeedInventory.SeeLowerDivisionAcademicCourseGuideManual.(CTCCBM004)

AcademicCreditCourseAcollege-levelcoursethat,ifsuccessfullycompleted,canbeappliedtowardthenumberofcoursesrequiredforachievingadegree,diploma,certificate,orotherformalaward.

AcademicProgramInstructionalprogramleadingtowardanassociate’s,bachelor’s,master’s,doctor’s,orfirst-professionaldegreeorresultingincreditsthatcanbeappliedtooneofthesedegrees.

AcademicYearThe12-monthperiodoftimegenerallyextendingfromSeptembertoAugust.

AcademicallyDisadvantagedWhenreportingacademicallydisadvantagedstudents,collegesmayreportstudentswho,basedonaTexasSuccessInitiative(TSI)approvedtest,donothavecollegeentry-levelskillsinreading,writing,ormath.CollegesshouldalsoreportTSIcompliantstudentswhoareenrolledinremedialcoursesbasedontheresultsoftestsadministeredforplacementpurposes.TheInterimEvaluationReportdefinitionmayalsobeappliedforstudentswhodidnotreceiveahighschooldiplomanorreceiveaGEDcertificate.Fieldwillcontain“1”ifthestudentisacademicallydisadvantaged.Pleasenotethatacademicallydisadvantageddoesnotincludestudentswithlearningdisabilities.(CTCCBM001,CBM00A,CBM0E1)

AccountabilitySystemTheHigherEducationAccountabilitySystemisusedtotrackperformanceoncriticalmeasuresthatexemplifyhighereducationinstitutions'missions.TheSystemismodeledonthestate'shighereducationplan,ClosingtheGapsby2015.ItsmajorfocusisonthefourClosingtheGapstargetareasofparticipation,success,excellence,andresearch.

AccreditationAprocesssignifyingthataninstitutionhasapurposeappropriatetohighereducationandresources,programs,andservicessufficienttoaccomplishitspurposeonacontinuingbasis.CollegesinTexasshouldrefertothePrinciplesofAccreditation(replacestheCriteriaforAccreditation)bytheCommissiononCollegesoftheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchools(SACS).TheCBnowrecognizesotheraccreditingagencies,whichcanbefoundonourwebsiteatAccreditorRecognition.

AccumulatedDeferredMaintenance(ADM)Projectsfromprioryearsthatwerenotincludedinthemaintenanceprogrambecauseofperceivedlowerprioritystatusthanthosefundedwithinthebudget.

ACCUPLACERAnapprovedacademicskillsassessmentinstrumentthatallowsastudenttosatisfyoneormoresection(s)oftheTexasSuccessInitiative(TSI)uponmeetingthedesignatedstandardforthatsectionorsections.ItisofferedbyTheCollegeBoard.(CBM002)

ACTAmericanCollegeTest.TheACTassessmentprogrammeasureseducationaldevelopmentandreadinesstopursuecollege-levelcourseworkinEnglish,mathematics,naturalscience,andsocialstudies.AstudentwhomeetsCBstandardsondesignatedsection(s)oftheACTisexemptfromtherequirementsoftheTexasSuccessInitiative(TSI)fortherelatedsection(s).(CBM002)

ActualCapitalInvestmentThisfigureisnotadjustedforinflation,butisacumulativetotalofactualdollarsinvestedtothenearestdollar.Ifabuildingisnotownedbytheinstitution,reportthedollaramountinvestedforitsuse.Ifabuildingisagiftorhasnocapitalinvestmentforotherreasons,enter‘1’.Thisisthetotalbudgetrequiredtooccupyanewfacility,including:

AdvancedTechnologyCertificate(ATC)Acertificatethathasaspecificassociateorbaccalaureatedegree(or,insomecircumstances,junior-levelstandinginabaccalaureatedegreeprogram)asprerequisiteforadmission.Itmustconsistofatleast16andnomorethan50semestercredithours.Itmustbefocused,clearlyrelatedtotheprerequisitedegree,andjustifiabletomeetindustryorexternalagencyrequirements.(CTCCBM009)

ATCAnAdvancedTechnologyCertificateprogramiscomprisedof16-50semestercredithours.Astudentmusthaveanassociatedegree,baccalaureatedegree,orjuniorstatusinabaccalaureatedegreeprogram.(CTCCBM009)

Audit/Auding(aclass)Astudentelectstotakeacoursebutdoesnotwishtoreceivecreditforthecoursetowardadegreeorotherformalaward.Sincethisactivityisnotcreditbearing,itisnotconsideredstate-fundable.StudentswhoauditaclassarenotincludedontheCBM001,CBM004,CBM00A,CBM00C,orCBM00S.

AutomatedStudentandAdultLearnerFollow-upSystem(ASALFS)Anautomatedprocessthatusesemploymentandeducationdatabasestotrackuniversity,community,technical,andstatecollegeprogramcompleters(bothdegreeandcertificaterecipients),verifyingtheirstatus ofemploymentorfurthereducation.Universitystudentsarealsotrackedforsomemeasures.Thefollow-upsystemisusedforprogramevaluationandstate/federalreporting.

AuxiliaryEnterpriseFundsFundsforactivitiesthatfurnishaservicetostudents,faculty,orstaffforwhichchargesaremadethataredirectlyrelatedtothecostoftheservice.Auxiliaryenterprisesaremanagedasessentiallyself-supportingactivities.Examplesareresidencehalls,foodservices,studenthealthservices,intercollegiateathletics,collegestores,andcollegeunions.(Univ,HRICBM008)
