Curriculum

Seventh grade English focuses on improving reading comprehension and writing skills. Class time is divided into sections: Independent Reading, Read-Aloud, Talk-Aloud, and Writing. During Independent Reading students spend ten minutes reading a book of their choice. They then respond to the book in a weekly Book Log. The Read-Aloud is a time when a novel is read to the students. Students follow along and ask questions. The Talk-Aloud is when students ask questions about the Read-Aloud book. A discussion takes place and Literary Elements are uncovered. The Writing Section of class is time devoted to practice and improve writing skills; grammar, sentence structure, graphic organizers, paragraph development.

Supplies

All students are expected to have a binder, lined paper, and a reading book for class. The binder will be used daily in class. Students are responsible for bringing their binder and a pen to class every day.

Grading

Grades are calculated each semester and a report card is sent home. The point system is used to calculate grades. Each assignment is assigned a number of points. At the end of the semester, points are added up and converted to a percentage. The second quarter average includes a midterm exam grade which counts as twenty percent of the average.

Homework

English homework is always assigned on Monday and Tuesday. As need dictates, homework may be assigned on other days as well. Homework assignments are written on the side board. Students should record assignments in their planner.

25 Book Campaign

The 25 book campaign is a school-wide expectation that every student will read twenty-five books during the school year. Once a book is read, students complete an Annotated Bibliography entry on that book. Reading progress is monitored throughout the year and the school periodically offers incentives to read.

Behavior Expectations

Students should behave properly in class and follow school rules. The PBIS matrix is posted in class and students are expected to treat themselves, each other, and the school with respect. If any behavior problem occurs, parents will immediately be contacted.

Extra Help

I am available after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:50 until 3:20 to help students. Students wishing to stay should let me know in class. Transportation home is provided by the school. Any student who stays after with me will be given a note for their parent indicating that they were after and why.

Parents wishing to set up a conference may do so through the Guidance office at any time during the school year.
