EDSE 527: Adapted Sport, Recreation, and Leisure

Course Description

An introduction in tools for adapting sports, recreation, and leisure activities to promote the benefits of active participation, relaxation, health, and well-being for individuals with differing abilities. Students will participate in simulations, research, and design. Knowledge and awareness components of this course may be delivered via distance learning.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, students will:

1.  define sport, recreation, and leisure.

2.  identify adaptations in sport, recreation and leisure for varying abilities

3.  identify sport, recreation and leisure companies and organizations providing assistive technology devices and services.

4.  prepare a project report on one or more sport, recreation or leisure organization offering accommodations for persons with disabilities who may want to participate.

Relationship of Course to Program Goals and Professional Organizations

This course is part of the George Mason University, Graduate School of Education, and Special Education Program for teacher licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the special education areas of Emotional Disturbance and Learning Disabilities. This program complies with the standards for teacher licensure established by the Council for Exceptional Children, the major special education professional organization. As such the learning objectives for this course cover many of the competencies for curriculum and methods for teaching individuals with emotional disturbances and learning disabilities kindergarten through grade 12.

Monday, 7/1 Introduction to Adapted Sports, Recreation, and Leisure

Activity analysis, Ability analysis

Case Study

Wednesday, 7/3 Adapting activities.

August Submit two Community Recreation Project “Checklists”.

Final Presentation: Webshop on Assistive Technology in Sports, Recreation, and Leisure.

Course Requirements

The text for this class is a one year subscription to an adapted sport, recreation, and/or leisure publication.

1.  Class Attendance: Students must attend ALL classes. (15 points)

2.  Class Participation: Students are required to participate in the discussions and activities of the class. (15 points)

3.  Adapted activity: Students are required to adapt an activity and demonstrate it with other students in the classroom. (15 points)

4.  Webshop: Students must create a webshop on adapting sports, recreation or leisure. (25 points)

5.  Community Recreation Project: (15 points)

Class Assignments

Class Assignment given 7/1, due 7/3: Adaptive Equipment

Please construct a piece of adaptive equipment that will allow an individual to participate in a recreational activity. Use household items that are inexpensive and easily replaced if necessary. Be prepared to demonstrate your equipment on 7/14/04.

Class Assignment given 7/1/04, due August: Community Recreation Project

Please take the opportunity to visit two local sport/recreation/leisure locations in your local area that offer recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Complete the “Checklist for existing Facilities” for each facility during your visit. Please indicate what has been done or could be done to better accommodate individuals with disabilities. Submit the two completed checklists in August.

Class Assignment given 7/1/04, due August: Webshop Project

Please create a webshop regarding adaptive sports, recreation and leisure using the guidelines discussed in class. Be prepared to present/summarize your webshop in 5 minutes or less to the class and other AT Certificate Instructors in August.
